Description

Probation in England and Wales was regarded as social work for most of the 20th century, but some thirty years ago the government rejected this conception, consequently dismissing social work as the proper education for probation staff. This presentation, part of the @DMUPPHub Prison and Probation Series Professor Rob Canton will argue that it is more than time to revisit that decision and consider the implications for probation’s mission. The skills and values of social work continue to characterise probation because they match up to the challenges of the job. In that case, these values may turn out more resilient and less susceptible to policy change than is sometimes supposed. Probation is criminal justice social work.
