Dr Bernardi Pranggono is an Associate Professor in Cyber Security in the School of Computer Science and Informatics at De Montfort University (DMU), with expertise in computer networks and cybersecurity. He has more than 20 years of experience across academia and industry. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a SPRITE+ Fellow. He is also the current Chair of the Industrial IoT Networks Special Interest Group of the IEEE Internet of Things, Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks (IoT-AHSN) Technical Committee.
His research centres on securing critical infrastructure. This covers operational technology (OT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) security, federated learning for privacy-preserving intrusion and anomaly detection, and digital twin resilience. This work sits within his broader interests in cybersecurity, the Internet of Things, applied AI, and green ICT.
He has led and contributed to projects funded by EPSRC (SPRITE+, INSTANT, HIPNet, INTERNET, and CSIT), Innovate UK, the British Council, and the EU’s FP7 programme (PRECYSE).
Before joining DMU, he held academic and research posts at Anglia Ruskin University, Sheffield Hallam University, Glasgow Caledonian University, Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Leeds, where he completed his PhD. In industry, he worked at Oracle, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Accenture, and Telstra.
Bernardi has co-authored more than 50 papers in leading international journals and conferences, as well as four book chapters. He is an Associate Editor of Frontiers of Computer Science and Frontiers in Communications and Networks. He has served as a chair and technical programme committee member for IEEE ICC, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE INDIN, IEEE ICPS, and IEEE HPCC. He also reviews for journals including IEEE Access, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Internet of Things Journal, and Computers & Security.
