Dr Mohamed Fadel is a Lecturer in Biomedical Science at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, De Montfort University. He holds a BSc and MSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Sebha University, Libya, and a PhD in Genetics and Genome Biology from the University of Leicester, UK.
Dr Fadel began his academic career at Sebha University, teaching Biomedical Science modules including Genetics, Molecular Genetics, and Body Fluid Analysis. He also worked as a Visiting Lecturer, delivering courses in Microbiology, Diagnostic Microbiology, and Cytogenetics, supervising undergraduate research projects, and providing academic guidance for postgraduate students. As Quality Assurance Lead for the Biomedical Science programme, he ensured the curriculum met national standards.
Prior to his PhD, Dr Fadel worked as a Biomedical Scientist for the Ministry of Health in public and private clinics across southern Libya. Following his doctorate, he joined the University of Leicester as an Honorary Research Associate and Research Assistant with Professor Julian Ketley,to develope molecular tools to study bacterial pathogenesis, and supporting the teaching of Genetics and Microbiology modules.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he contributed to the UK’s national testing response as a Senior Scientist and Subject Matter Expert in RT-PCR at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), overseeing quality assurance and PCR reagent validation at the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory.
Dr Fadel’s research focuses on bacterial iron uptake systems and their role in regulating antibiotic resistance genes. His broader interests include antimicrobial resistance and developing novel alternative agents against pathogenic bacteria using molecular biology approaches.
