Personal profile

Kate Chapman joined the drama team in January 2015 having worked across the UK in theatre and broadcasting for 25 years.

Before coming to De Montfort University, Kate was a visiting lecturer at Birmingham, Lincoln, Wolverhampton and Derby universities and at Central School of Speech and Drama teaching writing for theatre and for radio at postgraduate and undergraduate level. In the late-90s Kate was fellow in theatre at Bradford University where she was artistic director of Theatre in the Mill, programming small-scale theatre and dance. She specialises in the development of new work for performance and has worked as a dramaturg and director for Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse, New Perspectives, Kali Theatre Company and Eastern Angles Theatre Company. From 2009 - 2011 Kate was director of Theatre Writing Partnership, developing new writing for theatre across the East Midlands with theatre makers and writers.

Kate has also devised theatre with school groups, in prisons and in other community settings. She started her career running a community theatre company in Kent staging large-scale site-specific work. From 2004 to 2008, she was a director and producer for BBC Radio Drama based in Birmingham. She continues to collaborate with writers to create new work for radio. In 2005 she embarked on a programme of research and experimental work combining site-specific performance and audio drama which resulted in a series of commissions for theatres and festivals in the Midlands.
