Are You Experienced? Demon Media students are thanks to Handmade festival

It’s a tough gig – but someone’s got to do it! Students from De Montfort Students’ Union’s (DSU) Demon Media are preparing for the ultimate experience when they get to interview bands and organise live broadcasts from Leicester’s Handmade Festival.

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is one of the official supporters of Handmade, which runs from this Friday to Sunday, and this has led to students being offered some amazing opportunities to get hands on experience of working at a major music and arts event.

Demon FM, which broadcasts 24 hours a day across Leicester city centre on 107.5FM, and Demon TV, have now revealed that they will be on site at the 02 Academy for the entire weekend capturing a flavour of the festival with live outside broadcasts (OBs) and interviews with bands.

This year’s Handmade starts tomorrow night with events across the city before the main music festival runs across four venues in Leicester’s 02 Academy on Saturday and Sunday.

Major acts such as Cabbage, Frightened Rabbit, British Sea Power and Twin Atlantic will be performing alongside more than 50 bands to watch, such as God Damn, Honeyblood, Kagoule and Gallops. A number of Leicester-based bands will also be taking to the festival stages and there will be art, photography, comedy and film events too.

Deepali Kansal, a second year Media Production student, will be organising interviews for Demon TV which will be edited and posted on their YouTube channel.

She said: “We will be getting reactions from bands and organising live sessions. This is my first producer role for Demon TV so it is going to be an amazing experience.

“Handmade is such a massive event for Leicester. There are such a wide range of bands and events going on so there is something for everyone. I am so excited.”

Rhiann Tintor, a second year Photography and Video student, is the producer of Demon FM’s Catalyst show.

She said: “We are going to be doing live interviews with bands and running an OB from 7pm to 10pm on the Saturday night. So we will be broadcasting the sets by Shame, Demob Happy and Cabbage. The team will also be broadcasting some of the interviews on the Catalyst show next week.

“It is going to be an amazing experience. Handmade is such a big deal. It is great that DMU is supporting the live music scene. Working at Handmade is so good for us as students. It‘s going to help us get the foot in the door when it comes to a career.”

Thanks to DMU’s partnership with Handmade we are currently offering students the chance to win a pair of tickets for the festival.

There is also a special offer for DMU students to get a full weekend festival wristband for £30 instead of the usual £40. Just visit the ticketing site here.
