Celebratory dinner highlights inspiring students and sporting success


A triumphant, inspiring and charitable year for De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) sports clubs, societies and volunteers, was celebrated at a spectacular evening dinner for over 300 students.

The Vice Chancellor’s Student Activities Dinner brought together representatives from 37 sports clubs, 99 societies  De Montfort Students' Union (DSU) plus student-media to highlight exceptional achievement and celebrate DMU’s student experience.

It is the second time the unique event has been organised and held at DMU’s multi-purpose facility, The Venue@DMU.

Students were treated to a delicious three course meal, plus live entertainment from the Mariachis Band as seen on the Doritos crisp TV advertisements.

Picking up the big awards on the night were DMU Bollywood Dance with the Society of the Term, while DMU Netball claimed Sports Team of the term.

Varsha Chawla, Bollywood Dance President, said: “We were all so shocked and really didn’t expect it. It was such an amazing moment to see the effort we have put into the society from the beginning of term has be recognised.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the committee and our members.

“We aim to continue reaching our aims and succeeding even more throughout the year.”

Bollywood Dance recently performed in front of 40,000 people at a Diwali celebration in the city and they have a #DMUglobal trip to India planned in 2017.

They have also been extremely charitable, spending time at the Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough, dancing at the City of Leicester College event for the Needy in Nepal as well as helping to organise Square Mile India’s Bollywood charity event.

DMU netball has had an incredible first term, with the 1st team sitting top of their British University and College Sports (BUCS) league. They have also improved their development side, Campus 330 involvement has increased by 80% and they have planned a #DMUglobal trip to Barbados.

Sadie Burch, Club Chairwoman, said: “I am extremely proud of everyone in the club and how far we’ve come since last year. I’m looking forward to seeing the club continue to prosper this season.

“It’s exciting with the additional help from DMU Sport, the Strength and Conditioning team and our coach how far the club can develop in future years.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to the work put in by committee and the dedication of the players as our progression would not have been possible without the help from everyone.” 

The DMU Islamic Society were awarded Charitable Society of the term after raising a staggering £16, 573 during Charity Week, part of an international campaign which raised money for Orphans and needy children around the world. They came in second place as the highest overall fundraisers in the Midlands region.

Charitable Sports Term of the Term was won by the men’s rugby club who had a successful November growing their moustaches, raising £5000 towards the national Movember campaign.

Vice Chancellors Sports Scholar; Charlotte Fish won Individual Sports Performance, for her efforts in captaining the university’s first ever women’s squash team while Individual Society Member of the term went to Damilare Akintade, for his project Chess in Schools.

DSU Vice President Media and Communications; Mike Mayes, awarded Demon Media Volunteer of the Term to, Kat Evans who has worked exceptionally hard on a number of high profile projects across campus and in the local community with Demon TV.
