Hundreds of engineering students to benefit from new DMU partnership in India

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has signed a promising new partnership agreement with a leading technology institute in India's westernmost state of Gujarat.

The Gandhinagar Institute of Technology (GIT), affiliated with the prestigious Gujarat Technological University (GTU), will jointly offer students a DMU degree programme in Mechanical Engineering, and Electronic and Communication Engineering.

Large numbers of engineering students will benefit from the combined expertise of two universities working together to provide outstanding global education, with students beginning their degrees in August 2016 and joining DMU from GIT in the future.

Professor Dominic Shellard, DMU's Vice-Chancellor said: "As a natural evolution of our city's friendship with India, I am proud that DMU's extensive international portfolio of high-quality Indian partners is expanding in this region.

"DMU is recognised for producing graduates with the expertise and vision needed to succeed in today's global marketplace, enhancing opportunity for international exchange and co-operation.

"The promising new agreement with the Gandhinagar Institute of Technology in Gujarat is an important development."

As testament to the successful partnership between the two institutions, the agreement has received formal approval by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).

Providing increased recruitment potential for both partners, more Indian students will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons with international education, and the high-quality students joining DMU from GIT will add to the rich diversity already celebrated on the university's campus in the heart of Leicester.

As a truly international university, DMU welcomes students from more than 130 countries and has recently been ranked as one of the finest universities in the world for international impact according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16.

To help Indian students access this exciting new programme, the university will be offering two merit-based scholarships of £5,000 to GIT.

Professor Shellard also visited the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad and signed its visitor's book, having received the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Medal from the Gandhi Global Family in October 2013, previously awarded to Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama.

DMU will also be signing a partnership agreement with the Unitedworld Institute of Design this week.
