Dance BA (Hons) Practical Selection Day

Practical Selection Days are a key part of our selection process because Dance requires specific skills and qualities. Watching you perform allows us to assess your current skill level and whether studying Dance at DMU is the right fit for you.

They also provide you with an opportunity to meet some of the staff who will be teaching you, chat with current students and take a tour around our fantastic facilities!

What will happen on the day?

Your Practical Selection Day will consist of the following activities:

  • Check-in
  • Introduction to the course
  • Group warm-up
  • Solo auditions (1-2 minutes each)
  • Interviews
  • Facilities tour

What should you prepare?

Prepare a short solo performance (two minutes max), choreographed by yourself or with the help of a teacher. You are welcome to perform dance in any dance style that you prefer as we teach a range of classes as part of our programme, including Contemporary, Ballet for Contemporary dancers, Africanist Principles, Jazz, and Hip Hop/Street.

  • Think about why you want to study this course, how it aligns with your passions and what excited you most about it.
  • Review your application, and remind yourself what you have written.
  • Watch some contemporary dance performances, and be ready to discuss them with us.
  • Relax—we want you to have a fun and enjoyable experience!

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for passion, critical thinking, and confident movement.

Audition

During your solo, we’ll be looking for your potential to:

  • Demonstrate co-ordination, technique and use of space
  • Create and confidently perform inventive solo choreography

Interview

In your discussion with a member of the dance team, we will be looking for your potential to:

  • Share your interest and experience in dance
  • Show curiosity about other dance and creative practices
