Cyber Security and Computer Networks and Security
-
Session title: Cyber Security
We will present the BSc Cyber Security and Computer Networks and Security programmes in detail, including their structure, technical depth, and the rationale behind the modules delivered. We will explain how cyber security awareness and practical skills are embedded throughout the UG programmes. Candidates will see how students progress from core areas such as computing, secure coding, endpoint security, and business infrastructure to more advanced topics including networking, cryptography, penetration testing, malware and threat analysis, and AI-driven cyber security. We will also describe our final-year projects, which are aligned with real-world challenges. They will also see that how the extensive delivery of these core subjects across the programmes makes them strong and well-structured degrees.
We will also introduce our current research activities in cyber security, placement opportunities, and the virtual learning environment. A key focus will be the growing impact of AI in cyber security, highlighting both its opportunities and risks. In the AI era, strong foundational knowledge is more important than ever. Without this, students and organisations may become overly dependent on AI systems without fully understanding their limitations, maintenance requirements, privacy implications, security risks, and centralisation concerns. Our programmes embrace AI responsibly by integrating it in a structured and critical manner.
Following the presentation, we will deliver several hands-on demos, allowing candidates to experience practical aspects of the field. These include attacking a TANK system, a water reservoir/industrial control system simulation using Siemens ICS devices, where water is pumped to an upper reservoir during periods of low energy demand and released through gravitational force to generate energy during peak demand periods. Other demonstrations include a password cracking exercise, digital forensics analysis of a mobile device, and the design of a secure network architecture. Candidates will also visit our specialised facilities, including hands-on cyber labs, the Security Operations Centre (SOC) lab, and networking labs. These environments support simulations, attack-and-defence scenarios, applied coursework, and the critical evaluation of AI-driven cyber security systems.
