What qualifications do I need?

There are a lot of different things to consider when taking the step towards university. It might be, do they have the course that I’m looking for? Do my A levels grades meet the requirements of where I want to go? We’re going to help you understand the qualifications you’ll need. Tip 1? Check the entry requirements for the programme you’re interested in directly on the course page.

What are entry requirements?

Entry requirements are the qualifications, subjects, and grades you need, or are expected to achieve, to be considered for a particular course.

At DMU, each course sets its own entry criteria. These are designed to make sure you have the right academic background and preparation to succeed on your chosen programme.

Depending on the course, requirements may include:

  • GCSEs (or equivalent qualifications)
  • Level 3 qualifications such as A Levels, BTECs or T Levels
  • Access to HE Diplomas
  • International qualifications
  • Relevant work experience (for some courses)

Some programmes may also require specific subjects, portfolios, interviews or auditions.

UCAS Tariff points

Many of our undergraduate courses use the UCAS Tariff system as part of their entry requirements.

The UCAS Tariff converts a wide range of post-16 qualifications into points. This allows universities to compare applicants who may have studied different qualifications.

For example, A Levels, BTECs and other Level 3 qualifications can be converted into Tariff points. You can use the official UCAS Tariff calculator to work out how many points your qualifications are worth.

Please note: not all DMU courses use Tariff points, some may ask for specific grades instead.

Why does DMU have entry requirements?

Entry requirements help ensure that students are prepared for the academic demands of university study.

Some courses, particularly in areas such as healthcare, engineering or creative subjects, may require prior knowledge, specific subjects, or practical experience. This ensures you can fully engage with the course content from the start and make the most of your time at DMU.

We also take a supportive and inclusive approach to admissions. In some cases, we may consider contextual information such as educational or personal disadvantage, alternative qualifications, or relevant experience alongside your academic achievements.

How do I find the entry requirements for my course?

The most accurate and up-to-date information can be found on each course page on the DMU website.

Simply:

  1. Search for your chosen course
  2. Navigate to the Entry requirements section.
  3. Review the qualifications, grades and any additional criteria listed.
