Is an apprenticeship or HTQ right for me?

There is more than one route to achieving your ambitions. As well as degrees, we offer other qualifications so you can choose a pathway that suits you. There are two main alternatives, apprenticeships and Higher Technical Qualifications.

Apprenticeships

Earn while you learn
An apprenticeship is a mix of full-time employment and academic learning that gives you a higher education qualification. As an apprentice, you’ll be employed and spend around 80% of your time working and 20% studying so you can earn while you learn. It’s a more industry-driven alternative that still gives you a nationally recognised qualification and the knowledge and skills you need for your chosen career.

Who are apprenticeships for?
If you’re over 16 and want to gain a qualification but also want to earn a salary, then an apprenticeship is a good option. There are different levels of apprenticeship, from level 2 (the equivalent of 5 GCSEs) to level 7 (the equivalent of a Master’s degree).

You’ll need to find an employer first - companies advertise apprenticeship vacancies throughout the year, so you can check their websites directly. The National Apprenticeship Service advertises the largest selection of apprenticeship vacancies.

No tuition fees
Not only will you earn a salary as an apprentice, but there are no tuition fees for you either. Your employer and the Government will pay the full cost of your apprenticeship programme.

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs)

Focus on industry-specific skills
Higher Technical Qualifications are level 4 and 5 qualifications developed with employers and approved by Skills England. They include Certificates in Higher Education, Higher National Diplomas and Foundation Degrees. They’re designed to prepare you for skilled jobs in high-demand industries like engineering, health, and digital technologies. The HTQ is a quality mark that lets employers know that you have developed the required skills and knowledge to succeed in your chosen industry.

Who are HTQs for?
HTQs are for those who want a technical, career-focused qualification that combines classroom learning with hands-on experience. They’re for both sixth form/college leavers and adults who wish to retrain, upskill or gain a particular qualification to progress in their career. Courses can be completed in one year for level 4 or two years for level 5, and you’ll gain advanced technical knowledge and practical skills that meet employer standards.
