My experience as a commuter student

"I chose to commute because I’m a Leicestershire local and was living at home with my parents, which allowed me to save a lot of money compared to moving into accommodation.

As a commuter student, it had both positives and drawbacks. Since I live quite far from campus and didn’t know how to drive, it took two buses to get home, which could be long and tiring at times. However, the financial savings made it worthwhile.

In terms of my studies, commuting worked well overall because I planned my time around my lecture schedule, often staying on campus between sessions to make the most of the day rather than travelling back and forth."

Why Leicester is easy to reach

Leicester is in the heart of the UK, making it ideal for commuters.

  • Approx 45 minutes to Nottingham
  • Approx 1 hour to Birmingham
  • Approx 1 hour to London

Leicester Railway Station is just a 15–20 minute walk to campus. So whether you're travelling locally or from another city, DMU is well connected by train, bus and road.

Travel options

By train

Fast, direct routes connect Leicester to major cities. You can save money with a 16–25 Railcard (up to 1/3 off fares) and by booking in advance.

By bus

Leicester has regular and affordable bus services across the city and surrounding areas. Single fares are capped to help keep travel costs low.

By car

Leicester is close to the M1, M69 and A1, making it easy to drive from nearby towns and cities. Parking on campus is limited, but student permits are available.

By bike

Cycle stands are available on campus if you prefer an active commute.

Support with travel costs

If you live more than 10 miles from campus, you may be eligible for financial support through the DMU Support Fund to help with travel costs.

Making the most of commuting

Commuting doesn’t mean missing out. You can still:

  • Join societies and student groups
  • Use campus study spaces between classes
  • Study in the Kimberlin Library (open 24/7)
  • Access dedicated commuter spaces on campus

Many students enjoy commuting because it helps create a clear balance between university and home life.

Study on campus

While on campus, take advantage of your time between classes to reduce your workload at home.

With various study spaces on campus to enjoy, whether you want to work alone or study with a group of friends or classmates, there is a space for everyone.

All of the buildings where you study include spaces and corners for both individual and group study sessions. The library also offers a range of study spaces suitable for individual and group study.
