Sometimes networking events can feel like stepping into the unknown. Suits, small talk and long pauses; it's not always everyone’s idea of a relaxing evening.

The DMU Glow Up Networking Event for Law Students was created to offer something different. Instead of formal introductions and a high pressure atmosphere, we welcomed more than 50 law students into a calm, friendly and supportive space. The focus was to bring together wellness, confidence and career development in one relaxed event.

From the moment students arrived, it was clear this would not be a typical stand by the name badge and hope for the best networking session. There was food, drinks, plenty of laughter and meaningful conversations.

A highlight of the evening was the chance to have a professional LinkedIn headshot taken. Students queued to have a polished photo they could use straight away. For many, it was a practical step that made career progression feel real and achievable.

Alongside the photography, our team shared straightforward networking advice such as how to start a conversation, how to follow up without feeling uncomfortable and how to build lasting professional connections. Attendees engaged in open discussions where students asked thoughtful questions about life after university, career pathways and how to navigate professional spaces when everything still feels new.

The atmosphere remained informal throughout. Students moved around the room chatting in small groups, sharing experiences and exchanging LinkedIn details with far more confidence than they expected. Many stayed long after the official end time, showing that when networking feels accessible, people want to take part.

The aim of the event was to make networking less intimidating and demonstrate that professional development can sit comfortably alongside wellbeing. Judging by the conversations, the energy in the room and the number of new headshots shared online the next day, it was a success.
