The De Montfort University (DMU) School of Law has been recognised as one of the leading centres for legal research in the UK and globally. In the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, DMU Law is ranked second in the UK and 13th in the world for Research Quality.

This ranking reflects how effectively universities contribute to spreading knowledge and ideas. Key factors include the impact of research citations and how often work is referenced in serious scholarship worldwide. In short, it shows which research is shaping the conversation and advancing understanding across the global legal community.

DMU legal scholars are making waves in areas such as criminal law, including manslaughter, diminished responsibility and fitness to plead, policing powers like stop and search, as well as constitutional and administrative law, intellectual property, governance of global markets and money laundering.

Professor Julia Shaw, Director of the Centre for Law and Social Justice, said the recognition highlights the real-world significance of the school’s research.

“Our work is recognised internationally for its rigour, impact and significance. We focus on the issues that most affect society’s vulnerable, and we are committed to examining how law and policymaking can promote, or sometimes hinder, social justice,” she said.

Over the past three years, DMU Law has also secured almost €11.5 million in research funding from major European bodies, supporting projects on labour market regulation, employment law reform, public finance, cyberwarfare, responsible technologies and international humanitarian law. Many of these studies combine insights from multiple disciplines, reflecting the complex challenges facing legal systems today.

Alan East, Head of Leicester De Montfort Law School, said the ranking was a proud moment for the school.

“Our researchers tackle complex, real-world problems and help shape legal thinking, policy development and law-making in the UK and beyond. Being recognised at this level is a testament to the dedication and talent of our academic community,” he said.

The ranking cements DMU Law’s reputation as a research-driven school with global influence, making it a compelling choice for students who want to study in a vibrant and internationally recognised environment.
