Free English lessons

The second programme of Free English Lessons concluded on Friday 15 June. The lessons were attended by thirty beginner and intermediate learners of English aged 18 to 65 years.

The primary aim was to help the residents communicate in familiar situations. In pairs and groups, using recordings and transcripts as models, the students were asked to role play everyday situations such as introducing themselves to each other in informal and formal settings, asking for and giving personal details, spelling names and addresses, filling in forms, making appointments with a GP and describing the symptoms and talking about their likes and dislikes.

Through using De Montfort University’s (DMU) classrooms, the two tutors could make the lessons more interesting and suitable for all learning styles, using DMU facilities. The tutors also recommended various websites, podcasts and online dictionaries to encourage the residents to become more independent and autonomous learners. Certificates will shortly be sent to all participants.
