Advice and guidance for mature students

At DMU Leicester more than a quarter of undergraduate students are over 21, which is the recognised age at which anyone returning to full-time education becomes classed as a mature student. So, if you are a mature student at DMU meeting like-minded people with the same interests and life experience as yourself won’t be a problem.

Why return to education?

There are many reasons why people choose to return to education. Some of the main factors include:

  • Starting a new career
  • Career progression
  • Enhancing self-confidence
  • Developing new skills

Did you know?

Mature students often outperform their younger counterparts which is often down to the additional ‘life’ experience they’ve gained before starting their degrees.

At DMU Leicester we value this experience so even if you lack formal qualifications you may still be able to study for a degree.

Access to Higher Education qualifications

More than 20,000 students in the UK, who do not have the qualifications usually required to study at university, apply with Access qualifications each year. DMU Leicester is happy to accept both Access to Higher Education certificates and diplomas.

Check our course pages| for each course’s specific entry requirements.

Applying to DMU

All applications for full-time higher education courses at DMU are made through UCAS; see our entry and admissions criteria| for more information.

Flexible study options

Mature students often have established work and family commitments and full-time study may not be appropriate. At DMU Leicester many courses have part-time options|, allowing students to fit study around other commitments.

Funding your studies

DMU Leicester is committed to ensuring talented students have the opportunity to study and we have a range of scholarships and bursaries to help finance their studies. No fees are required upfront and repayment is only required after graduation when earnings go above £21,000.
