Overview

Prepare for a career within the rapidly evolving creative and digital media industries. Combining practical production skills with audience insight, communication strategy, and emerging technologies, you will learn how to create engaging content across video, audio, photography, social media, broadcast, and digital campaign platforms.

You'll develop your skills through hands-on experience using industry-standard facilities, software, and professional workflows, while building a portfolio of creative work that reflects contemporary industry practice. From producing multimedia content and live-streamed productions to developing digital campaigns, exploring AI-assisted content creation, and understanding how audiences interact with media, you'll graduate with the technical, creative, and strategic skills needed to succeed across the modern media landscape.

On this course, you will:

What you will study

Block 1: Photography and Video Foundations

Develop core skills in camera operation, lighting, composition, visual storytelling, and editing across photography and video production. You will explore creative approaches to image-making, learn professional production techniques, and develop the ability to create engaging visual content for contemporary digital platforms.

Block 2: Livestreaming Video

Learn television studio production, multi-camera workflows, directing, vision mixing, and live-streaming production. You will gain practical experience working within a studio environment, developing skills in planning, producing, and delivering live content while understanding the professional roles involved in broadcast and online streaming.

Block 3: Podcast Production Foundations

Produce engaging radio and podcast content while developing skills in audio recording, editing, storytelling, and production workflows. You will explore studio-based audio production, interviewing techniques, sound design, and digital publishing methods to create content for contemporary audiences.

Block 4: Social Media Audiences and Representation

Explore how media content is created, shared, and interpreted while developing an understanding of audiences, representation, and digital communication. You will examine how social platforms influence storytelling, identity, and engagement while learning how to create meaningful content for diverse communities.

Block 1: Content Strategy and Digital Campaigns

Learn how organisations develop integrated content strategies across multiple platforms and audiences. You will explore campaign planning, audience engagement, platform-specific communication, and digital content workflows to create effective media strategies for contemporary brands and organisations.

Professional Podcast and Radio Production

Develop advanced audio production skills through the creation of professional podcast and radio content. You will explore factual storytelling, interviewing, editorial decision-making, studio production, and digital distribution while developing content suitable for contemporary audio platforms.

Commercial Photography and AI Content Creation

Develop professional commercial photography skills while exploring emerging AI-assisted content creation workflows. You will learn how photography, branding, and artificial intelligence can be combined to produce engaging visual content, while critically considering issues of creativity, ethics, authenticity, and professional practice.

Block 3: Choice of modules

Choose one of the following:

Live Broadcast and Studio Production

Develop advanced skills in live television and studio production through multi-camera workflows, studio management, directing, and broadcast operations. You will gain experience producing complex live content while working collaboratively within professional production roles and environments.

Media, PR and Brand Communication

Explore how organisations use media, public relations, and strategic communication to build relationships with audiences. You will develop skills in campaign planning, brand messaging, reputation management, and creating effective communication strategies across digital platforms.

Block 4: Creative Media Agency Practice

Work within a simulated media agency environment to deliver content for industry-style briefs and clients. You will develop professional production skills through collaborative projects, managing creative workflows, responding to client requirements, and building experience of industry expectations and deadlines.

As part of this course, you will have the option to complete a paid placement year which offers invaluable professional experience.

Our award-winning Careers Team can help you secure a placement through activities such as mock interviews and practice aptitude tests, and you will be assigned a personal tutor to support you throughout your placement.

Block 1: Research and Audience Insight for the Major Project

Develop research, audience analysis, and project planning skills to support your final major project. You will explore research methods, audience behaviour, and creative development approaches to produce an informed proposal that guides your independent production.

Advanced Commercial Video Production

Develop advanced video production skills for commercial, promotional, and advertising contexts. You will explore professional cinematography, advanced editing workflows, colour grading, and production techniques to create high-quality video content for contemporary media industries.

Digital Campaign Strategy and Leadership

Develop advanced skills in designing and leading integrated digital campaigns. You will explore audience data, strategic communication, brand positioning, and campaign management while developing the leadership skills required to deliver effective media strategies.

Block 3: Choice of modules

Choose one of the following: 

Advanced Creative Audio and Radio

Develop specialist audio production skills through advanced radio, podcast, and digital audio projects. You will explore creative storytelling, documentary approaches, sound design, and professional production workflows to create engaging content for contemporary audiences.

Advanced Commercial Photography and Creative Branding

Develop advanced photographic and creative direction skills for professional branding and commercial contexts. You will create sophisticated visual campaigns while exploring creative strategy, client relationships, audience engagement, and professional portfolio development.

Block 4: Major Project and Professional Portfolio

Produce a substantial, independent creative project and portfolio aligned with your chosen specialism. You will apply your technical, creative, and strategic skills to develop professional-quality work that demonstrates your individual identity and prepares you for future employment or further study.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band (or equivalent) when you start the course is essential.

English language tuition, delivered by our British Council-accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and throughout the course if you need it.

Additional costs

The core textbooks for all modules are available in the Kimberlin Library, and journal articles in your reading lists are also mostly available electronically from your myDMU login.

Some students like to purchase their own text books or print course documents and we suggest allowing approximately £200 per year for this.

All students are required to pay for their DBS check if required for your programme or placement.

In addition students will be required to pay for their travel costs to placements or project locations.

All students are provided the opportunity to participate in DMU Global trips. These trips are subsidised by the university, and the cost and subsidy varies by location.
