Our Accounting with Business Management BSc (Hons) is engineered to help you thrive in a fast-changing global economy. What you will study

Block 1: Accounting in Business Environment

On this module, you will learn to decode the economic forces that shape corporate strategy. You will gain knowledge in the legal frameworks that govern commerce and the ethics of corporate social responsibility. This course provides you with an analytical toolkit required to lead in the modern economy. 

Block 2: Organisational Performance and AI

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the essential accounting and business techniques used to evaluate and support organisational performance. You will apply advanced digital business information concepts and artificial intelligence tools in a variety of real-world scenarios to drive operational efficiency and enhance corporate outcomes.  

Block 3: Financial Accounting

This module introduces you to the core principles and foundational concepts of financial accounting. From understanding basic financial transactions to mastering the preparation and analysis of essential financial statements. You will develop the critical analytical skills needed to evaluate an organisation's financial health and provide actionable insights for business decision-making. 

Block 4: Management Accounting

This module introduces you to the fundamental techniques that underpin management accounting, revealing how financial information is used to drive decisions in both commercial businesses and public sector organisations.

You will explore the role management accounting plays in wider society. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this module connects financial understanding with global responsibility. You will look at real-world sustainability challenges and discover how modern accounting specialists use their skills to measure progress, tackle global issues, and shape a more sustainable future for businesses and communities.

Block 1: Organisational Behaviour

This module draws on insights from psychology, sociology, politics, and economics to decode the complexities of human action in the workplace. You will critically examine how power, culture, team dynamics, and leadership styles directly shape employee behaviour and overall organisational performance.

You will analyse how technology, data-driven management, and new organisational structures are fundamentally reshaping how we communicate, motivate, and lead. By exploring business systems and informal workplace politics, you will develop analytical skills needed to navigate change and lead organisations effectively.

Block 2: International Financial Reporting

This module provides a comprehensive review into International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), equipping you with the technical skills to prepare and present financial statements on a global scale. You will move beyond local frameworks to explore how international reporting fosters transparency and accountability across worldwide capital markets.

By learning to analyse financial information through an international lens, you will develop the analytical skills required to operate confidently within multinational corporations and global financial networks.

Block 3: Business Taxation

This module introduces you to the essential principles and practices of business taxation and exploring how tax laws influence corporate decisions such as financial planning. You will examine how major taxes affect both individuals and companies within their broader legal, economic, and regulatory frameworks.

This module emphasises ethical and professional responsibility, challenging you to analyse how corporate tax policies can be leveraged to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You will conclude this module with the strategic insight needed to navigate tax requirements responsibly.

Block 4: Performance Management and Decision Making

This module equips you with the advanced tools to analyse both quantitative and qualitative data, transforming raw information into actionable business strategy. You will master the techniques used to measure organisational performance and optimise resource allocation.

Across public and private sectors, you will explore how data-driven performance metrics inform decisions regarding efficiency, growth, and accountability. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this course provides an understanding on how to boost a company's bottom line, but also how to lead ethical, transparent, and sustainable organisational improvements.

As part of this course, you will have the option to complete a paid placement year which offers invaluable professional experience.

The optional placement year allows you to gain a minimum of 40 weeks of paid, industry-relevant work experience in the UK or abroad. You will apply theory in a professional context while developing confidence, networks and employability skills. The placement is fully supported and quality assured by the university, and will enable you to graduate with a ‘BA with placement year’ award.

Our award winning Careers Team can help you secure a placement through activities such as mock interviews and practice aptitude tests, and you will be assigned a personal tutor to support you throughout your placement.

Block 1: Strategic Management and Governance

This module provides a comprehensive examination of the foundations of strategic management and the dynamics of the contemporary organisational ecosystem. You will explore how external and internal environments influence organisational strategy, and how strategic options are generated and selected. The module will utilise a business simulation to allow students to manage a business and discover how strategy is implemented, how objectives are achieved, and how change is managed.

Block 2: Financial Strategy

This module looks at financial strategy in corporate decision-making. You will explore and analyse financing choices, investment appraisal techniques, and business valuation methods. The module also explores corporate restructuring, financial risk management, and working capital management. Emphasis is placed on applying financial tools and models to support strategic decisions that enhance firm value and shareholder wealth.   

Block 3: Choose a specialist module

In the third block of your final year, you will choose a specialist module from one of the below.

Project Management for Sustainable Business

This module will lead you through the world of modern project management, highlighting the tools and techniques necessary to undertake a project in a business environment in the private and public sectors. As the module progresses, you and your fellow students will apply the lessons learned to a business project situation. This module will enhance employability skills and develop your confidence to lead projects and stand out to future employers.

Accounting Simulation

This module is a simulation of the modern accounting and finance world. You won’t just study financial data; you will live it. Operating in a corporate environment, you will extract critical information and make important strategic decisions. You will pitch, write, and present your solutions just like a real financial analyst.

Block 4: Critical Risk Management and AI

This is a highly technical module that explores how organisations understand, assess, and respond to risks, and how Artificial Intelligence is transforming the risk landscape. You will explore traditional risk management practices, as well as the new and emerging risks caused by AI systems, including issues linked to data, ethics, and cyber threats. You will learn accounting techniques on how oversight of the risks is critical to the governance of organisations.

Our facilities

You will be taught in our purpose-built Hugh Aston Building equipped with lecture theatres and classrooms, break-out spaces for group work, quiet study zones for individual work, and high-spec IT labs installed with professional software.

You’ll also have access to the building’s new £5.5 million extension called The Yard, which provides more than 22,000 square metres of extra space. This is designed to facilitate your learning experience with large and airy breakout spaces, a new Student Advice Centre, and a balcony on the top floor. The Yard also features more comfortable classrooms and self-study spaces, allowing you to carry out independent study as well as group work.

Accreditations

Professional body accreditation and confirmation of exemptions is required for all programmes, when newly designed and on a regular basis thereafter. This process is underway to seek such approval from the various professional accountancy bodies to ensure that our students can benefit from the maximum exemptions available to them from their professional exams. Our programme has been designed to reflect the professional body requirements where possible. You can qualify for exemptions and potentially gain a professional qualification at an accelerated rate from various bodies.

The professional accounting bodies award exemptions in line with a student’s prior learning to provide the quickest possible route to qualification. A student with exemptions gains from an employability perspective. Such students are a good option to a prospective employer as the employer will not have to cover the costs of the professional examinations or provide study leave, which may disrupt the work schedule. Additional costs

The core textbooks for all modules are available in the Kimberlin Library, and journal articles in your reading lists are also mostly available electronically from your myDMU login.

Some students like to purchase their own text books or print course documents and we suggest allowing approximately £200 per year for this.

All students are required to pay for their DBS check if required for your programme or placement.

In addition students will be required to pay for their travel costs to placements or project locations.

All students are provided the opportunity to participate in DMU Global trips. These trips are subsidised by the university, and the cost and subsidy varies by location.
