Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how we work, solve problems and make decisions and organisations increasingly need professionals who can use these tools effectively and responsibly.

Whether you're looking to develop your existing expertise, explore new career opportunities or understand how AI can transform your professional field, on this course you’ll develop the practical knowledge and skills to apply artificial intelligence across a range of industries.

You'll learn how AI works and how to use it to analyse information, create written and visual content, and solve practical problems. You'll also explore the ethical, legal and societal implications of AI, learning how to assess the accuracy of AI-generated information, understand its limitations and use these technologies responsibly.

Key features

  • Learn by doing: Take part in practical workshops, real-world case studies and collaborative AI design hackathons, developing your technical and problem-solving skills.
  • Build your confidence with AI: Start with a compulsory introductory Python programming bootcamp, helping you develop the foundations needed to progress through the course, whatever your academic background.
  • Put your knowledge into practice: Complete an independent MSc project, exploring an AI-related challenge or developing a practical solution in an area that interests you.

What you will study

Year 1

Block 0: Python Programming Fundamentals

Before starting the taught modules, you'll complete a compulsory introductory Python programming bootcamp designed to help you prepare for postgraduate study in Applied AI.

This preparatory provision supports the development of the programming foundations needed to engage with AI tools and practical activities throughout the course. It is particularly useful for students joining from different academic or professional backgrounds.

Block 1: Practical AI

Develop a practical understanding of how AI works, from the mathematical principles behind it to using Python programming to build and test AI solutions.

You'll explore how computers learn from data to recognise patterns, make predictions and solve problems. You'll also gain experience using AI tools to generate content and support everyday tasks, while learning how to assess their accuracy and use them responsibly.

Block 2: Prompt Engineering and Generative AI Applications

Learn how to use generative AI effectively, including tools that can produce written content, answer questions and support professional tasks.

You'll develop techniques for writing and improving prompts to get more accurate and useful responses from AI systems. Through practical examples, you'll discover how these technologies can be used to solve problems across different industries, while considering their limitations, potential biases and responsible use.

Block 3: Research Methods for Applied AI

Develop the research skills needed to investigate AI-related challenges and assess how well different solutions work.

You'll learn how to plan research, collect and analyse information, evaluate findings and consider ethical issues. You'll also put these skills into practice through a collaborative AI design hackathon, working with others to tackle a practical challenge. This module will help prepare you for your independent MSc project.

Block 4: Multimodal Generative AI: Vision and Language Systems

Discover how AI can work with images, video and written language to analyse information, generate content and complete complex tasks.

You'll explore how these technologies are used in areas such as journalism, finance and the creative industries. Through practical activities and a collaborative AI design hackathon, you'll learn how to bring different AI capabilities together to develop and evaluate solutions to real-world challenges.

Blocks 5 and 6: MSc Project in Applied AI

Put your learning into practice by completing an independent project focused on an AI-related topic or challenge that interests you.

You could develop and test an AI-based system, carry out original research or investigate ways to solve an existing problem. With guidance from an academic supervisor, you'll plan and manage your project, evaluate your findings and present your work through a final written report and oral presentation.

Throughout this course, you'll develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to understand, apply and critically evaluate artificial intelligence in real-world settings.

You'll begin by exploring the fundamental principles of AI, including Python programming, machine learning and deep learning, before progressing to generative AI and prompt engineering. You'll learn how to work with Large Language Models (LLMs), evaluate AI-generated outputs and design solutions for professional challenges.

As your studies progress, you'll examine research methods and advanced AI applications involving computer vision, natural language processing and multimodal systems. You'll also explore how AI technologies can be developed and deployed responsibly, taking account of ethical, legal and professional considerations.

Practical learning is central to the course. You'll work on applied exercises, industry-informed case studies and collaborative AI design hackathons, building your problem-solving, analytical and teamwork skills.

The course culminates in a substantial independent MSc project, giving you the opportunity to investigate an AI-related topic or develop and evaluate a practical solution.

Note: All modules are indicative and based on the current academic session. Course information is correct at the time of publication and is subject to review. Exact modules may, therefore, vary for your intake in order to keep content current. If there are changes to your course we will, where reasonable, take steps to inform you as appropriate.
