Overview

The MSc Marketing Management degree programme enables you to learn, develop, and apply the best-practice skills and knowledge of a marketing professional, to a range of relevant commercial work environments, utilising marketing objectives, strategy, and tactics. The research and contextual-based learning enable students who are either new to the area of marketing, or experienced at an undergraduate level, to understand and apply management-level marketing practices, in a global situation.

Each subject area has been formed from input and involvement with live business and agencies, so students can learn the latest commercial practices, in addition to the academic thinking in the modern, digital landscape. Assessments are live industry situations with companies, so you can graduate with real-life experience of putting theory into practice, which helps with employability.

You will be able to deepen their understanding of marketing management through exposure to real world marketing challenges, the latest digital media and platforms, and the development of campaign strategies and tactics. You will also have an opportunity to broaden their expertise in strategic marketing decision-making, with a view of gaining a leadership position in marketing. You will face a final challenge to your marketing expertise in the form of a dissertation or marketing consultancy project.

  • Develop professionally and personally during the course, which will help you gain an advanced understand of the key issues and themes in Marketing Management and place you in a strong position to embark on a career in this profession.
  • Marketing Management authentic assessments are used to introduce a live, contemporary application for marketing theory in practice (and used in a LinkedIn profile).
  • The Marketing Consultancy Project module alternative to the dissertation, which gives you the opportunity to work on a real-life project and gain employability-relevant experience.
  • The optional Digital Marketing Strategy module will equip you for the digital world by introducing you to a broad range of digital marketing technology and platforms used in different marketing and industry situations.
  • Formed and constantly reviewed with leading marketing agencies and departments, to ensure that postgraduate students are receiving cutting-edge marketing practice education from industry experts.
  • Benefit from block teaching, where most students study one subject at a time. A simple timetable will allow you to really engage with your learning, receive regular feedback and assessments, get to know your course mates and enjoy a better study-life balance.

Teaching and assessment

Year 1

Block 1: Contemporary Marketing Practice

You will learn about the fundamental concepts of marketing, the tools and processes currently used by practising marketing professionals, and how they are currently applied in the marketplace. Additionally, this module looks at developments in marketing practice and the impact of digital technology.

Block 2: Strategic Brand Management

You will learn about brand management from both a theoretical and practical perspective. This module focuses on elements of current branding theory, practices and innovations within various market sectors, and types of organisations. You will also develop an appreciation of brands as equity, and the significance of this to organisational strategy.

Block 3: Integrated Marketing Communications

This module firstly considers how messages are processed and understood by the target audience and then evaluates the stages of the planning process required by organisations to develop a strategy that delivers a fully integrated campaign. You will have the opportunity to play the role of communication agency executives in determining, producing, and defending the development of a communications strategy using contemporary practice, in response to marketing communications problems and briefs.

Block 4: Choice of modules

Choose one from the below:

Digital Marketing Strategy

You will learn about the broad range of technology used in digital marketing. Companies and organisations of all sizes use a variety of technology and platforms in their digital marketing. This module will also explain and position the strategic digital marketing management decisions available in different market and industry situations enabled by digital technology.

Consumer Experience and Behaviour

Understanding customers is essential for businesses. In this module you will learn the importance of consumer insight, their motivations, their behaviours, their preferences and even their unmet needs to consistently provide them with added value that leads to strong loyalty and long-term relationships.

Blocks 5 and 6: Choice of modules

Choose one from the below:

Marketing Dissertation

You will design and develop your own independent research study (secondary and primary) on a specific marketing topic and present your analysis in a Marketing Dissertation. The Marketing Dissertation will enable you to combine the knowledge you have gained and apply that understanding and analysis independently to a marketing topic and context you choose. The module will encourage self-discipline through improved time management skills and follow through of project to completion. You will become competent at integrating ideas into a focused research structure and become competent at reading and writing effectively together with skills in self-analysis and reflection.

Marketing Consultancy Project

The Marketing Consultancy Project (MCP) is an individual consultancy project that provides a commercially and employability-relevant experience. You will compile a 10,000-word report that acts as a solution to a business research challenge. The assessment is in two parts:

  1. Main report – this includes details of the research, analysis and recommendations.
  2. Summary presentation – this is a self-recorded presentation that summarises the key research findings, analysis, and recommendations.

In an identical way to a business consultancy, the organisation will give a summary briefing to you, either face-to-face or by MS Teams. After 12 weeks of research and project formation, you will submit the report and an mp4 file of your summary presentation. MCP briefs are live projects so you will gain a guaranteed business consultancy experience and apply the skills you have learned to make a genuine impact – you will be able to summarise the experience on my CV. All MCP briefs will be scrutinised by the module team to ensure they are appropriate to give the elevated level of commercial experience required.

The learning and teaching methods on this programme embrace a broad range of approaches that have demonstrated effectiveness in postgraduate marketing education. They are based on commercial practice with businesses and agencies, so students graduate with a toolkit of live, contextual achievements. These include both formal and informal inputs. Traditional lectures will outline the models, theoretical frameworks for the different areas of marketing, with a cutting-edge focus on strategic alternatives and considerations. Tutorial discussion and other interactive activities such as seminars, workshops, and case study analysis encourage students to examine further the core elements of marketing in a critically analytical manner. Other approaches might include videos, guest lectures, collaborative group work, such as presentations and projects, and individual presentations, simulations and computer modelling and the Dissertation or Marketing Consultancy Project.

Assessment strategy is based on testing a wide range of skills required for marketing management practice. Support is provided through feedback on initial work and general guidance. Examples include reports, infographics with tables and diagrams, presentations and coursework. Students are encouraged to showcase their work on LinkedIn because the work ties in directly to employability.
