What you will study

Block 1 – International Finance

This module introduces advanced concepts in international finance and considers how domestic and multinational organisations use financial resources and manage financial risk. Students explore exchange-rate and interest-rate movements, financing choices, investment decisions and capital structures. The module also examines established and contemporary financial theories and models, including market efficiency, capital asset pricing and dividend policy, and develops the ability to interpret and use financial data in decision-making.

Block 2 – Critical Issues in International Business

This module examines the complexity of the international business environment and the challenges organisations face when operating within and across national boundaries. Students consider multinational enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, international trade and investment, and the intercultural, regulatory and political issues that shape global business activity. The module develops the ability to apply international business theories to contemporary organisational cases.

Block 3 – option – Contemporary Issues in Finance and Investments

This module takes a contemporary and critical approach to current issues in finance and investment. Students explore areas such as sustainable and green finance, Islamic finance, mergers and acquisitions, digital finance including cryptocurrency and blockchain, and the regulation of financial institutions. It also considers public-sector finance, the role of institutions such as central banks and the IMF, and fiscal recovery policies in periods of economic disruption.

Block 3 – option – Entrepreneurship and Ethical Leadership

This module explores entrepreneurship, innovation, risk, organisational culture, change and leadership. Students consider the entrepreneurial ecosystem, distinguish between entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, and examine how leadership theory, ethical values and governance can support sustainable organisational outcomes. The module also develops critical understanding of leadership behaviour and the skills needed to lead in uncertain and diverse environments.

Block 4 – option – Financial Statement Analysis and Valuation

This module develops the ability to interpret financial statements and apply valuation models in a range of decision-making contexts. Students examine company valuation, security and credit analysis, distress prediction, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance. A range of analytical tools and techniques is used to support the extraction, interpretation and evaluation of corporate accounting and financial data.

Block 4 – option – Strategic Business Management

This module examines approaches, concepts and frameworks in strategic management and how organisations are managed strategically and sustainably. Students analyse internal and external environments, organisational culture, strategic options, knowledge and technology, competitive advantage and performance measurement. Real-life case studies are used to develop the ability to apply strategic tools and evaluate organisational decisions.

Note: All modules are indicative and based on the current academic session. Course information is correct at the time of publication and is subject to review. Teaching and learning

Students learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, online resources, formative activities and self-directed study. Feedback is provided throughout the programme to support the development of technical knowledge, economic and business understanding, and strategic decision-making skills.

There is a strong emphasis on research and analytical skills. Across the programme, students engage with financial data, business information, theories, contemporary issues and organisational cases to develop critical judgement and the ability to apply knowledge in finance and business contexts.

The course uses DMU’s block teaching approach, enabling students to focus intensively on a defined area of study.
