The careers that law opens are as varied as those who study it – it’s one of the most clearly defined pathways to a high‑earning professional career
Overview
Law shapes every aspect of society, from protecting individual rights and tackling global challenges to influencing how businesses, governments and communities make decisions. As the legal profession evolves with new tech, changing legislation and complex social issues, today's lawyers need more than legal knowledge. They need practical experience, commercial awareness and the confidence to make an impact.
At De Montfort University, you'll develop all the skills required. You'll be combining academic theory and real-world legal practice through placements, mentoring and opportunities to work with legal professionals. And you'll be building your practical experience and professional confidence in unique law facilities, including our magnificent 19th Century Crown Court that made legal history, and our contemporary mock courtroom and advocacy suite.
Year one of our Law LLB will give you a strong grounding in legal principles (essential for progression to a bar course or prep for qualifying as a solicitor). And in your second and third years, you’ll have the freedom to explore the areas of law you’re passionate about, choosing optional modules to shape your degree around your interests. There are also industry experience opportunities throughout. Some of these include our: Bar Futures Programme for those of you interested in the Bar, Panel Talks with legal professionals, Speed Interviewing with solicitors and barristers, Law Link Mentorship Scheme, and Tigers Temple – a chance for you to pitch solutions in exchange for a mentoring or work experience prize.

Career accelerator placements
Don’t just graduate with a degree, graduate with experience. We’re a Top 10 university for employability (Uni Compare, 2027), and our award-winning faculty careers team help and support you to secure a year-long placement that gets you closer to the career you want. Our students have completed placements with global names including Warner Bros and Toyota, as well as leading law firms like Shoosmiths and Gateley. As Law LLB student Bessie Lester puts it: “My placement year has given me professional experience to talk about on my CV and in interviews. I’ll be graduating with a year of experience as well as a degree, which many applicants won't have.”
Law opens doors. You decide where they lead.
A law degree can take you far beyond the courtroom. You could go into legal practice, media and journalism, policy and politics, business and entrepreneurship, or emerging fields such as technology and AI law. Our graduates have gone on to careers with organisations including the Crown Prosecution Service, Gowling WLG and Jaguar Land Rover, while others have pursued legal research.
At De Montfort University, your legal career starts before you graduate. Connect with the profession, put your learning into practice and gain the experience to take your next step with confidence. Whatever comes next, you’ll graduate ready for it.
Block teaching designed around you
You deserve a positive teaching and learning experience, where you feel part of a supportive and nurturing community. That’s why most students will enjoy an innovative approach to learning using block teaching, where you will study one module at a time. You’ll benefit from regular assessments – rather than lots of exams at the end of the year – and a simple timetable that allows you to engage with your subject and enjoy other aspects of university life such as sports, societies, meeting friends and discovering your new city. By studying with the same peers and tutor for each block, you’ll build friendships and a sense of belonging. Read more about block teaching.
