Stephen Lawrence Professional Scholarship
A prestigious scholarship programme offered by the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and De Montfort University Leicester (DMU). The scholarships enable DMU students from disadvantaged backgrounds to benefit from a fee reduction and an annual cash bursary.
The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust aims to transform the career opportunities of aspiring, talented people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Trust was founded by Stephen’s mother Doreen Lawrence, now Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, who became Chancellor of DMU in January 2016.
Initially, the Trust helped disadvantaged students into careers in architecture – the profession which Stephen wanted to enter. Since then, it has been expanded into other professions including law and journalism.
The DMU professional scholarships are offered to students studying:
- LLB (Hons) Law
- BA (Hons) Journalism
- BA (Hons) Architecture
There are three scholarships available, one for a student from each course. Each scholarship provides 50% off the cost of tuition fees and a £3,500 cash bursary each academic year.
Baroness Lawrence said: “Since becoming Chancellor of DMU I have been impressed with its commitment to diversity and to nurturing and supporting its talented students to succeed. By providing gifted young people at the beginning of their career with a scholarship, we will establish a rich talent pool and help increase diversity and achievement, supporting ambitious students to be the best they can be."
Application forms for the Scholarship for the 2019/20 academic period will be available from November 2019. Please revisit this page nearer the time for more information.
For more information/details of the scholarship please read the eligibility criteria and terms and conditions.
The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust encourages applications from black minority and ethnic groups, and those from disadvantaged, marginalised and low-income backgrounds.
