Mathematics is integral to applications and equipment we rely on every day. From building computers, to flying a plane or even providing much-needed healthcare practices, mathematics is an indispensable skill for an extensive range of industries.

This course enables you to develop highly sought-after logical and analytical thought processes, problem-solving abilities and good computing techniques, which will give you the opportunity to pursue careers in a wide range of fields including finance, credit risk, business intelligence, actuarial science, teaching, and research.

Entry criteria

  • A typical offer is 112 UCAS points from at least two A-levels or equivalent, including A-level Mathematics at B or above, or
  • Applied Science BTEC National Diploma/Extended Diploma at DMM to include relevant Mathematics modules. In addition for all other BTEC courses A-level Mathematics at grade B or above will be required

Plus five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Mathematics or equivalent.

Alternative qualifications include:

  • Pass Access in the QAA accredited Access to HE Maths course with at least 15 credits in Mathematics at distinction. English and Mathematics GCSE required as a separate qualification as equivalency is not accepted within the Access qualification.

We will normally require students to have had a break from full-time education before undertaking the Access course.

  • International Baccalaureate: 26+ points with Maths at higher level grade 6

We welcome applications from mature students with non-standard qualifications and recognise all other equivalent and international qualifications.

English language

If English is not your first language then an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component (or equivalent) is essential.

English Language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and throughout the course if you need it.

The course is taught by friendly, knowledgeable, experienced staff who use a variety of teaching and learning methods, including: lectures, tutorials and computer-based laboratory sessions. The choice of software used is informed by industry practice, thus ensuring that your technical and practical skills are up-to-date and relevant.

You will be taught to use professional software such as Minitab, SPSS, SAS and Matlab, and you will work on scenario-based examples allowing you to apply mathematics and develop professional skills via written reports, laboratory assessments and verbal presentations.


You will normally attend around 12-16 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and can expect to undertake at least 24 further hours of independent study such as reading around the topic area to supplement your lecture notes, completing tutorial work, computer laboratory exercises and coursework.


Facilities and features

Computer laboratories

Our computer laboratories provide workstations for students to use alongside four interconnected computing laboratories with HP PCs running Windows/Linux.

All the machines are connected to a dedicated, high-performance file server for storage and backup of students' work. Many of the software packages are open source, which means students can download and run the software needed for their course work while at home. The laboratories also include study spaces where you can work individually or in groups.

Library and learning zones

The main Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and offers a range of print and online resources to support your studies. Many resources and services can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.

The library staff offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching, reference management and assistive technology. There is also a Just Ask service for help and advice, available via email or telephone. We also have space across campus for group or individual work and study, with computer stations, laptops, plasma screens and assistive technology available.

More flexible ways to learn

Our Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has been recognised as leading the university sector. It builds upon our pledge to offer an equitable and inclusive approach to learning and teaching for all our students.

UDL means we offer a wide variety of support, facilities and technology to all students, including those with disabilities and specific learning differences.

Just one of the ways we do this is by using ‘DMU Replay’ – a technology providing all students with anytime access to audio and/or visual material of lectures.

This means students can revise taught material in the way which suits them best, whether it's replaying a recording of a class or adapting written material shared in class using specialist software.

Graduate Careers

This practical course will help to expand your mathematical expertise and nurture your logical and analytical thought processes.

Students will also develop mathematical and statistical skills and technical rigour, creating good problem-solving abilities. The course also covers appropriate industry standard software including Excel, Minitab, SAS and MATLAB. You will further develop your professional skills in report writing and presentation skills.

Graduates may pursue careers specific to mathematics, such as mathematical modelling, financial management, pensions, investment and forensic science investigation, or consider a statistics career in data analysis, data mining, data science, customer relationship management or actuarial work. There are also relevant roles in operational research, business and education sectors, which appeal to many Mathematics graduates.

Previous trips for Mathematics students have included a visit to the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and a trip to Berlin where students visited the Museum of Technology and Market Logic Software AG.
