Healthcare Science Audiology BSc (Hons) Modules

First year

  • Professional Healthcare Science Practice 1 - building the underpinning knowledge, and accompanying skills and attitudes to work as an Audiology healthcare science practitioner, with a focus on communication and teamwork, and professional standards
  • Medical Sciences - introducing general and specialised human anatomy and physiology which underpins the more specialised teaching in year’s two and three
  • Scientific Basis of Healthcare Science - providing a strong foundation in the relevant mathematics and statistical methods, and the basic concepts found in general physical sciences
  • Physics for Clinical Measurement: providing a background to the concepts of instrumentation used in the neurosensory sciences, together with an appreciation of the physical principles that underpin these concepts and measurements
  • Neurosensory Physiology and Pathophysiology – the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the ear and auditory system including the brain and reflex mechanisms
  • Clinical Measurement and Treatment and Work-based Learning - Understand the basic principles underpinning the routine investigations and procedures carried out on the diagnosis and treatment of patients referred to each of the specialist areas. Includes your first clinical placement

Second year

  • Auditory Science 1 – clinical assessment of auditory function, appropriate selection of test strategy, test procedures and interpretation of results according to recommended clinical procedures
  • Professional Healthcare Science Practice 2 – increase the students’ understanding and application of patient-centred care, safe practice, and multi-disciplinary teams to support the whole person
  • Adult Aural Rehabilitation – patient centred approach, implications of hearing loss on significant others, including communication.  The use of technology to support the needs of hearing impaired patients
  • Applied Physiological Measurement and Instrumentation - understand the principles of physiological measurements within the Neurosensory Sciences and is able to work safely within these environments
  • Research Methods - introduction to the importance and application of various types of research, statistical evaluation methods and data presentation within the context of healthcare science.
  • Clinical Practice Year 2 - experience of healthcare science, which ensures that the student can undertake the breadth of practice expected of a newly qualified Healthcare Science Practitioner

Third year

  • Clinical Practice Year 3  - experience of healthcare science, which ensures that the student can undertake the breadth of practice expected of a newly qualified Healthcare Science Practitioner
  • Professional Healthcare Science Practice 3 – exploration of the wider health and social care agenda, including leadership within the healthcare system
  • Auditory Science 2 – in-depth understanding of the procedures used in objective hearing assessment Oto-acoustic Emission (OAE) and Electrophysiological Response Audiometry (ERA) testing and exploring the theories of sound perception
  • Paediatric Audiology – current practice of assessment and management of hearing difficulties in children.
  • Balance Science - this module is designed to develop clinical skills in the assessment and management of dizzy patients.
  • Final Year Project - this module provides students with the opportunity to carry out an in-depth research project.
