Overview

Are you a student of management or Business at HND level? Would you like to study for a degree in Global Arts Management in one year? Would you like to be taught by industry experts at an institution with world-class facilities? 

DMU’s Global Arts Management is an applied subject where you develop an understanding of academic debates and business management skills as applied to the arts from an international perspective.  The course structure allows you to develop your interests and specialise as you progress in your studies.

In addition to deepening your understanding of academic debates, our course will help equip you with the practical tools and skills needed to become a leader in key areas of the cultural arena, including theatres, music venues, galleries, museums and festivals.

You will have an opportunity to contribute to the high-profile annual Cultural eXchanges Festival. Previous events have featured inspiring, well-known guests such as Benjamin Zephaniah, Meera Syal and Dame Carol Ann Duffy.

Entry criteria

Typical entry requirements

This is a top-up programme available to students who have already completed a:

  • Year two (Level 5) of a management or Business - related degree course; or
  • HND course in management Business; or

We welcome applications from Mature students with non-standard qualifications, providing they have relevant experience to complement their qualifications.

 

International students

If English is not your first language an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band, or equivalent when you start the course is essential. English Language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and throughout the course if you need it.

Structure

Assessment is tailored to the module contents and learning objectives and in Arts and Festivals Management this is predominantly coursework – essays, reports, critiques; finance exercises; case study analysis; reports/presentations and a final year dissertation.

Contact hours

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports). You will normally attend around 8 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and we expect you to undertake at least 20 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research.

We have a wide range of contacts with arts organisations including Festival Republic, the Leicester Comedy Festival, Curve Theatre and the London South Bank Centre.  

Facilities and features

Clephan Building

The Clephan Building is home to DMU’s humanities subjects, and is equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment and cinema screens. It also houses a number of key Arts, Design and Humanities student support facilities such as the Placement Team and Student Advice Centre where you can access information about timetabling, specialist support queries, and any other questions you may have about your course.

Library

The main Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (other than in exceptional circumstances) and offers a huge range of online resources, all of which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.

The library is run by dedicated staff who offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching and reference management and assistive technology, and mathematical skills for non-maths students. There is also a Just Ask service for help and advice, available via email or telephone.

 

Learning zones

Our Learning Zones and The Greenhouse also provide space for group or individual work and study.

There are 1,600 study places across all library locations, more than 700 computer stations, laptops to borrow, free wi-fi and desktop power outlets.

You can also book rooms with plasma screens, laptops and DVD facilities for group work and presentations, secure an individual study room with adjustable lighting or make use of our assistive technology.

Cultural Exchanges

DMU’s Cultural Exchanges festival, run by our Arts and Festival Management BA (Hons) students, features a variety of guests and speakers from the cultural and creative industries and previous guests have included: Germaine Greer, Honor Blackman, Alastair Campbell, Nitin Sawhney, Andrew Motion, Alan Yentob, Alan Moore, Meera Syal, Ben Okri, Louis De Bernieres, Trevor Nelson, Grayson Perry and Matthew Bourne. Participating in the Cultural eXchanges festival provides an additional insight into interacting with artists, audiences and communities from different cultural backgrounds.

For example Evie Manuel is Managing Director of Full Circle Events, Saskia Collins is Artist Liaison Manager for Save the Children, Adele Robinson has won a coveted place on the graduate scheme with the prestigious Ambassador Theatre Group, Amisha Karia is Head of Collections and Paintings at Paintings in Hospitals, Charlene McManus is a Company Director for Debbie Allen Associates Management (who look after Sue Perkins and Bradley Walsh) and Dan Jones has set up his own successful company Festaxi, counting Festival Republic among his clients.

We offer a range of high-standard accommodation for our students, with 14 halls of residence — and around 4,300 rooms — all of which are within easy walking distance of the campus.
