Entry criteria

Entry criteria

Applicants will normally hold an undergraduate degree with a minimum pass of 2:2, or overseas equivalent, in marketing or in business or management with substantial marketing content.

Applicants typically require 45 credits, or equivalent, in marketing to receive an offer for this course. Applicants with no marketing experience or fewer than 45 credits should apply for our Marketing Management MSc.

Applicants with no formal qualifications but with significant business experience will be considered on an individual basis. 

Students with the CIM PG Diploma qualification can also take advantage of the CIM top-up scheme. This gives 60 credits exemptions from the taught modules on the MSc.

English Language requirements

If English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 6.0 (including a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or equivalent is normally required.

English language tuition is available at DMU both before and during the course, if required.

Course modules

This course is grounded in the latest theory and also has a strong practical element. There will be many chances to apply your knowledge and develop the advanced skills that will help you to enjoy a successful marketing career.

The content of the modules reflects the changing marketing landscape. For example, developments in social and digital media are embedded throughout the programme and are integral to certain modules such as Direct and Digital Marketing, Strategic e-Marketing and New Media Perspectives.

Other key themes of the programme include: insight management, innovation and entrepreneurship, project management, customer management, campaign planning, paid, owned and earned media planning, marketing metrics, working with agencies and international marketing perspectives.

Core modules

  • Strategic Marketing - designed to strengthen students' understanding of fundamental marketing concepts by investigating strategy theory and practice. Students will progress from application of essential marketing concepts to applying strategic marketing analysis frameworks in contemporary contexts 
  • Social Media Strategy - examines the nature and evolution of the social media landscape as well as the implications of emerging and convergent social and mobile technologies for marketing strategy
  • Managing Advertising and Communications - provides a thorough grounding in all aspects of promotional activity, especially integrated marketing communications and the development and management of advertising campaigns
  • Marketing Research in Practice - shows how marketing decision making is supported by detailed marketing information and the techniques employed to gather and assess that information
  • Research Methods for Marketers – develops research and analysis skills for an in-depth understanding of markets in preparation for the marketing analysis project 
  • Direct and Digital Marketing - explores the properties of various direct and digital media and how they are used. You will also examine the core targeting principles which underpin their use and measurement, and how they can be applied correctly and effectively in modern marketing.

During the final semester you will complete a:

Dissertation: provides an invaluable opportunity to work in depth on a particular aspect of an international business and entrepreneurship topic of your choice. The topics of the dissertation are chosen in line with your interests and preferences, but mainly look at application of management theory to small firms.

OR

Business Research Project (BRP): is an individual enterprise consultancy project that serves as a commercially and employability relevant experience. The BRP is a live project where you gain a guaranteed business consultancy experience and are able to use your learned skills to make a genuine impact and benefit for a company.

Modules include formal lectures, tutorials, workshops and interactive sessions.

Teaching contact hours

Full-time option

For the full-time option you should be prepared to devote approximately 38 hours a week to your studies. You will typically have up to 14 hours contact hours of teaching most weeks for semester 1 and 2. Teaching is through a mix of lecturers, tutorials, seminars and lab sessions and the breakdown of these activities is shown in each module description.

In addition each module provides a 2 hour surgery each week available for individual consultation with the lecturer. You may also have some scheduled meetings with your programme leader, personal tutor, and/or careers throughout the year to discuss your academic progress and personal development.

Self-directed study: In order to prepare for, and assimilate, the work in lectures and seminars you will be expected to make regular use of our on-line resources, participate in classroom discussions including on our virtual learning environment (VLE) and engage in personal study, revision and reflection for approximately 24 hours per work during semester 1 and 2.

In semester 3, you will undertake independent research for your dissertation (or In-company project), and again should typically allow around 38 hours per week for this. You will be allocated a dedicated academic supervisor to support you, who you will be able to contact on a regular basis.

Part-time option

For the part-time option you should be prepared to devote approximately 19 hours a week to your studies. You will typically have up to 7 hours contact hours of teaching most weeks. Teaching is through a mix of lecturers, tutorials, seminars and lab sessions and the breakdown of these activities is shown in each module description.

In addition each module provides a surgery hour each week available for individual consultation with the lecturer. You may also have some scheduled meetings with your programme leader, personal tutor, and/or careers throughout the year to discuss your academic progress and personal development.

Self-directed study: In order to prepare for, and assimilate, the work in lectures and seminars you will be expected to make regular use of our on-line resources, participate in classroom discussions including on our virtual learning environment (VLE) and engage in personal study, revision and reflection for approximately 12 hours per work during teaching weeks.

Once you have completed all the taught modules, you will then undertake independent research for your dissertation (or In-company project), and should typically allow around 19 hours per week for this. Accreditations

We are accredited by The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) for a Dual Award. This Dual Award means that while you are studying for your qualification you also have the opportunity to work towards achieving the CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing.

In addition, if you successfully complete the elective Direct and Digital Marketing module you will benefit from significant exemptions from the Certificate in Direct and Digital Marketing awarded by the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM). Most of our students opt to take the additional exam required and leave with this professional standard certificate alongside their marketing degree.  These additional professional qualifications differentiate you from other candidates in a competitive jobs market.

Facilities and features

Hugh Aston Building

You will have access to our purpose-built Hugh Aston Building, equipped with lecture theatres and classrooms, break-out spaces for group work, quiet study zones for individual work and IT labs. Wherever possible, students will be given home access to specialist software.

You’ll also have access to the building’s new £5.5 million extension called The Yard, which provides more than 22,000 square meters of extra space. The extension is designed to make your studies more comfortable, featuring classrooms, self-study spaces equipped with USB sockets to charge your phone or laptop, a large and airy student breakout space, a new Student Advice Centre and a balcony on the top floor overlooking our beautiful campus. 

Library services

On campus, the main Kimberlin Library offers a space where you can work, study and access a vast range of print materials, with computer stations, laptops, plasma screens and assistive technology also available. 

As well as providing a physical space in which to work, we offer online tools to support your studies, and our extensive online collection of resources accessible from our Library website, e-books, specialised databases and electronic journals and films which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose. 

We will support you to confidently use a huge range of learning technologies, including Blackboard, Collaborate Ultra, DMU Replay, MS Teams, Turnitin and more. Alongside this, you can access LinkedIn Learning and learn how to use Microsoft 365, and study support software such as mind mapping and note-taking through our new Digital Student Skills Hub. 

The library staff offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching, reference management and assistive technology. There is also a ‘Just Ask’ service for help and advice, live LibChat, online workshops, tutorials and drop-ins available from our Learning Services, and weekly library live chat sessions that give you the chance to ask the library teams for help.

Learning zones

Our Learning Zones and The Greenhouse also provide space for group or individual work and study.

There are 1,600 study places across all library locations, more than 700 computer stations, laptops to borrow, free wi-fi and desktop power outlets.

You can also book rooms with plasma screens, laptops and DVD facilities for group work and presentations, secure an individual study room with adjustable lighting or make use of our assistive technology.
