Energy Engineering MSc modules

Study Skills and Research Methods equips you with the skills you need to successfully complete a research project of a high standard. The module introduces you to a range of research methodologies and practices relevant to the successful completion of the MSc.

Engineering Business Environment enables you to understand and reflect upon the role of businesses in a rapidly changing, globalised world. As well as considering the changing environment in which businesses operate, you will explore the steps a business can take to respond to the environmental challenges ahead; for example, through supply chain management, logistics, life-cycle analysis, green accounting and carbon trading.

Advanced Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer presents advanced topics in applied thermodynamics, combustion and heat transfer. You will acquire the skills needed to solve engineering problems in these fields using both analytical and computational methods.

Sustainable Energy describes the sources of energy, and how they are exploited with a wide range of technologies, with an emphasis on their environmental impacts and long-term sustainability.

Environmental Management and Policy enables you to critically understand how environmental policy and environmental management need to work together to move forward the future environmental agenda.

Power Generation & Transmission explores the technical aspects of electrical power generation and transmission. The characteristics of each generation technology will be covered, in terms of ramp up/down rate, carbon intensity, capacity and their overall strengths and weaknesses.

Individual Project

In your final term, you will undertake a research project on a topic of your choice, supervised by an experienced member of research staff.

Optional Modules:

Energy Analysis Techniques covers how to analyse data from buildings and industry to identify energy and greenhouse gas saving opportunities. These techniques will enable you to carry out an energy audit, energy survey and energy balance, and establish an ongoing energy-monitoring and target-setting regime for a building or industry.

Sustainable Buildings introduces you to the main aspects of sustainability in regards to the built environment, exploring the environmental, economic and social/cultural issues that need to be considered for achieving successful building design and operation. Topics include climate-responsive design, low/ zero carbon performance, energy and water consumption, human factors and urban planning.

Sustainable Development in Practice equips you with the core competencies needed to address sustainable development challenges in your future working life. These competencies include thinking systemically, interpersonal working skills and strategic thinking to develop projects, and have been identified by sustainability practitioners as key requirements for effective action in fields such as industry, education and governance.

Low Carbon Transport introduces you to a range of low-carbon transport technologies and includes the energy supply chains that are essential to their ‘low-carbon’ classification. You will explore the technologies and operational factors of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFVs) along with smart charging and vehicle-to-grid operations, dispatchable electrolysis for hydrogen production, fuel cell systems, ammonia, biofuel, synthetic fuel production and the integration of sustainable mobility systems with smart cities and smart grids.
