Design Management and Entrepreneurship MA application portfolio advice

We look at design portfolios as part of our selection process, as some of our postgraduate courses need specialist skills. It is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your creativity, innovation and design skills and what inspires you in the field of design thinking and design management.

A good portfolio should indicate something of your personality, it should be clearly structured, easy to read and well presented. It should consist of quality work rather than quantity so be selective about what you show.

What are we looking for?

  • Experience of designing creative solutions to problems working to a design brief
  • Evidence of software and Computer Assisted Design (CAD) skills, for example in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Drawing and visualisation skills in the broadest sense
  • An interest in design research and technology
  • Development of your ideas and how you research effectively for your area of interest
  • A motivated and independent approach to learning

What should a portfolio contain?

A good portfolio should contain quality work. It is not about quantity. We would recommend a maximum of 15 high quality pieces.  Evidence and explanation of your design thinking, ideas, process and development are equally important.

  • Include evidence of using software packages such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, Premier, After Effects and Adobe XD for example
  • Links to or screen shots of your design work
  • Life-drawing, storyboards examples, project mood boards and initial design sketches and experimental visualisations, including some colour work too
  • Examples of your design projects and design outcomes answering a design brief, which can be in 2D or 3D and can include physical designs, digital designs, animations and examples of sound and edited video sequences, if you have them

Written work

Please include a recent example of your written work, preferably from your undergraduate programme. It could be an essay or report or a more detailed discussion of one of the design projects. The Design Management and Entrepreneurship MA has a significant volume of written work and you will need to write project reports, dissertations and business plans, so you need to demonstrate that you can produce a good standard of written English and express yourself clearly.
