Teaching is delivered by our expert staff at the Cyber Technology Institute, which has been named as an NCSC Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research thanks to its pioneering research in incident response and cyber threat intelligence, industrial control systems and sociotechnical security.
Our Cyber Technology MSc course consists of five main themes –Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Digital Forensics, Software Engineering, and Management. It can be studied by combining modules from all five categories, allowing you to specialise in your chosen area of interest. Alternatively, you have the opportunity to choose mixed pathways, for example the choices of modules could lead to a degree in Cyber Security with Management.
The National Cyber Security Centre – part of GCHQ – has fully certified our MSc in Cyber Technology and MSc in Cyber Security in recognition of their excellence in providing students with a broad foundation of skills.

- We help our graduates to be prepared for roles such as consultancy, software houses or project management within organisations that are cyber security specialists. This includes areas such as law enforcement, government, commercial IT departments and security consultancies.
The emerging field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has created a demand for experts with an understanding of AI and its security implications. The AI pathway therefore focuses on the AI must-have tools and capabilities for the future in a fully interconnected smart world. You will gain an understanding of advanced topics, such as Machine Learning and Computer Vision, and development tools, such as facial recognition, and become equipped for a career in artificial intelligence.
Cyber Security: Constantly in the news, whether it is the theft of a laptop containing secret information, high-profile hacking incidents or an attack on the national critical infrastructure, it is impossible to ignore the importance of cyber security.
The Cyber Security modules are developed to provide the most up-to-date cyber security principles, practice, tools and techniques, taught by a team of ten experienced, specialist staff in a purpose-built computer security and forensics laboratory at DMU.
Digital Forensics: One of the fastest growing areas in the IT industry. The growing need for companies and governments to comply with regulations concerning data protection and adequate incident response means that all organisations now need computer security and/or digital forensics specialists.
Software Engineering: The overall aim of this theme is to consider software engineering as the systematic application of tools and techniques to the various stages of the software development process. In particular, to the specification, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and evolution stages of dependable, scalable and robust software systems within constraints of cost, time, available resource and pre-existing systems. The major focus of the course is the formal specification of such critical systems at every stage of development.
Management: Designed to equip students with the necessary skills and abilities to enable them to undertake complex business planning that is of great relevance to the modern global business environment. Management has developed as an academic discipline and profession, whereby the skills that it has been traditionally associated with have expanded beyond construction and engineering workplaces. Today, management is of relevance to all business fields, from the financial sector through to healthcare and information technology. New product development, change management, software development and event management are examples of the type of projects benefitting from a structured management approach. Management is only available as a mixed pathway.
Some of the modules within this programme are delivered in partnership with 7Safe (Cambridge), who deliver a set of well-established and respected professional training courses. For each of those hands-on modules DMU provides an academic assessment opportunity that explores and examines in an intellectually rigorous manner the wider academic context of the hands-on course content. In this way you will acquire both the professional practical skills and meet the international intellectual standards required for an MSc award.
