Dr. C.O., Locum Consultant Surgeon

"I registered with DMU for the MSC in Med Education, Leadership and Research with great trepidation due to a fear of having to ‘study’ again for 3 years to achieve my goals. I’m glad to say after 2 years it has been a smooth and rewarding experience. My objectives of achieving a post graduate qualification in Medical Education 20 years late was ideally blended with modules in leadership and research. The modules were clinically driven with just the right amount of theory to provide the academic content. The practical aspects of project work and the essays were innovative and made the whole journey that much easier. The faculty is led by Gary who is an eminent scholar, well read and has abundant energy to enthuse and encourage the students, he is well supported by his team and the debates in the classes were lively and thought provoking. At the end of 2 years I can confidently say that the course has made me a better teacher and leader – I have been appointed as the surgical lead at my trust for under graduate students from Sheffield University thanks to this and hope to progress further within the field of medical education."

Dr. A.K., Specialist Registrar in Nephrology and General Internal Medicine

"The Medical Leadership, Education and Research course has helped me gain insight into my strengths, as well as pushing me to identify and own the areas where I need to develop further. The study days are helpful in allowing time for reflection and discussion with others, and I benefit greatly from listening to the opinions and experiences of other healthcare professionals. The tutors are knowledgeable and most importantly, appreciate the balance between supportiveness and giving space, which in itself, encourages me to stretch my abilities and achieve my maximum potential. It has been a great experience so far and I look forward to what the course next has to offer..."

Dr. M.K., MBCHB MRCGP FHEA, GP, Specialist GP Educator xxx Medical School

"The Medical Leadership, Education and Research course has been a supportive and exciting course with strong links to practical application for personal leadership development. As the demand on our services increase, it is essential to foster innovation within both clinical and academic settings. This course has allowed me to build up my knowledge and skills, which I am already utilising in practice. A big thank you to Dr. Gary Keil and the team for their inspiration and encouragement!"

Dr. P.M., M.B., B.S., D.O., FRCSEd.

"I was one of the first batch of students enrolled in this new, exciting 3 years course - MSc in Medical Leadership & Advanced Professional skills in 2015 at De Montfort University Leicester. I had great classmates from different specialities and enjoyed meeting them and doing projects sharing everyone’s expertise. All the teachers and staff were very friendly, motivated and supportive. Great University with plenty of facilities and the course helped in all the additional skills which is required as a professional including Appraisal, Teaching, Innovation mindset, Leadership capabilities, Communication skills, Service development and Research to name a few. It was a great experience and would highly recommend it!"

Teaching and assessment

The programme adheres to the adage that "leadership cannot be taught; it must be learned" as much as possible. The programme combines self-managed distance-learning and blended (mixed media) interactive approaches in order to balance the needs of theoretical and practical/experiential learning, all for actively working HCPs. As the material will build from intensely personal analyses, i.e., asking "where am I in my role and career plan, and how can I be a leader in my context?" and "how do I fit in with key stakeholders?", to process- and guidance-led ones, i.e., asking "How can I influence and contribute to the wider strategic context?", the assessments include reflective reports, competency mapping, educational and scientific essays, oral presentations and scientific literature reviews.

Each PG Cert and Dip module will require high-quality submissions ranging between 2,000 and 3,000 words, as well as informal and formal oral presentations. The MSc assessment will be a master's level dissertation of approximately 15,000 words as well as a formal presentation to relevant DMU faculty and invited colleagues of the student.

Professional accreditation

Aspects of the programme helps registered physicians obtain their PG Certificate in Medical Education Training. Please contact the programme lead for more information.
