Counselling in the Workplace

This module is designed to introduce students to a range of counselling theories and their practical application with both adults and children.

The lectures and workshops are designed to provide students with knowledge of some of the most researched areas in the study of counselling interventions. This will include exploration of traditional approaches such as Humanistic and Psychodynamic counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and the relatively recent uses of integrative arts therapies, solution-focussed therapy, biographical counselling, motivational interviewing and life coaching.

Students will be encouraged to critically consider the use and relevance of different approaches for socially and culturally diverse groups and to enter into debates concerning professional ethics and boundaries when using counselling approaches as a non-counselling professional.

During the workshops there will be structured opportunities for students to explore and practise basic counselling skills which can safely be integrated into current or future working practice. Students will also be encouraged to reflect on personal strengths and abilities and how these can be further enhanced through the understanding and use of specific counselling strategies.

Entry Criteria

  • Effective registration with the NMC / HPC or other relevant professional body. ESSENTIAL
  • Undertaken successful level 4/5 academic study. ESSENTIAL
  • Currently be employed in practice and have the support of their manager in undertaking the module. ESSENTIAL
