Assessing Healthcare Students in Practical Placements
This module is designed for Registered Health Care Professionals working in a variety of healthcare settings and roles where they will be required to assess the practical competence and/or proficiency of healthcare students. It is for professionals who wish to study at degree level.
It will prepare nurses, midwives and nursing associates to take on the role of Practice Assessor in compliance with the NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (NMC 2018).
Assessment will be via three reflective pieces of work.

Theoretical sessions include:
- Professional body regulations and designated roles related to practical learning and assessment;
- Upholding public protection;
- Interpersonal communication skills relevant to student assessment, including the principles of feedback, debriefing, reflective practice;
- Providing constructive feedback to facilitate professional development in others;
- Practical assessment processes and procedures, including programme learning outcomes, proficiencies and skills;
- Conducting objective, evidence based assessments of students, including progression assessments;
- Information Technology applications for practical assessment;
- Tailoring assessment to diverse student needs;
- Managing a student not meeting the progression expected, including development planning and fitness for practice processes;
- Partnership working including maintaining the flow of information between supervisors, assessors and universities;
- Mechanisms for supporting practical assessors.
Entry Criteria
- Effective registration with the NMC/HCPC or other relevant professional body.i.e. ODP, Nurse, Physiotherapist ESSENTIAL
- 12 Months post registration experience, including experience of supervising students in practice environments
- Undertaken successful level 4/5 academic study. 120 Credits ESSENTIAL
- Currently be employed in practice and have the support of their manager in undertaking the module. ESSENTIAL
- Have a named practice supervisor throughout the duration of the module. ESSENTIAL
Preparation for Learning
- This is a degree-level module in which you will be expected to produce assessed work to a degree-level standard.
- If it is sometime since you produced an academic essay or undertook other kinds of academically assessed work, you will be well advised to consider doing some preparatory academic work.
- The Module Leader will advise and support the students.
