Advanced Principles and Practice of Stoma Care

The aim of the module is for the you to develop skills, knowledge and prepare for a role in stoma care nursing.

This module has been designed to enable nurses working in the field of stoma care to build upon their previous physiological, psychological and social knowledge base plus develop professional reflective and critical thinking skills. 

Entry Criteria

  • Effective registration with appropriate professional statutory regulatory body
  • Ability to study to degree level (120 credits level 4/5)
  • Evidence of recent study

  • Introduction to physiology of the gastro intestinal tract and urinary tract / altered physiology
  • Introduction to counselling skills
  • Development of self concept and body image
  • Nursing Assessment
  • Medical and surgical care, pre, peri and post operative care
  • Nutritional care
  • Professional developments in gastrointestinal / stoma care nursing
  • Stoma formation, with reference to the needs of specific groups e.g. differences in gender, sexuality, age, cultural differences etc
  • Types of stoma and reasons for formation, product selection, peri-stomal skin care
  • Role of support organizations, media, social media

Learning outcomes

  • Undertake a holistic patient assessment and provide the patient who is to undergo the formation of a stoma with individualised and appropriate care both in a hospital and the community from admission to discharge
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of health, rehabilitation and adaption in the concept of stoma forming surgery, evaluating the role of the Stoma Care Nurse in pre, peri, post operative and rehabilitative management / education of the new ostomist
  • Have knowledge regarding physical, social and psychological problems that the ostomist may have (e.g. fistulae formation, sexual dysfunction, changes to body image)
  • Critically analyse and explore situations related to the sphere of stoma care including multidisciplinary team work and pharmacological care
