Module description

This module analyses the new modes of governance that are increasingly common in the British political system. Students will be introduced to the full range of theoretical and practical issues that have underlain the development of multi-level and multi-organisational systems for policy-making, policy delivery and the management of traditionally public sector services. This module will: 1. Provide an introduction to the nature of governance, including an understanding of such factors as tiers and spheres, hierarchies, networks and markets; 2. Consider the importance of theory, ideology and political perspectives; 3. Examine the nature of governance through a variety of case-studies of policy areas such as sustainable development, care in the community, housing, primary care groups, urban regeneration, the arts, and private finance initiatives.
