English and European Legal Contexts

Module code: LLBP 1002

Module description

The module provides an introduction to both the English and European Legal Systems to ask what the law is and how it is made. It also provides an introduction to EU constitutional and administrative law, including such concepts as supremacy, direct applicability, direct effect and indirect effect. The structure of the English and European courts and the UK and EU legal processes are covered, as are the important areas of statutory interpretation and judicial precedent. Students should also develop an element of critical awareness and evaluation of the English and European legal systems and processes.

The module also focuses on the key skills needed for the study of law at undergraduate level, including writing essays and answering problem questions, and citation, referencing and good academic practice. In addition, it looks at key aspects of graduate career planning, such as writing applications, CVs and covering letters, as well as professional communication and interviewing skills.
