Module description

The aim of this module is to assist students to attain a sound knowledge of the basic law and practice relating to issues governing both the criminal law and the civil law in the sporting context. The module focuses on the law and practice in England and Wales, but uses comparative sources and foci where this is illustrative or facilitative of debate and understanding. Students will be required to critically evaluate either the criminal law or the civil law in the sporting context in a 5,000 word assignment. Criminal liability includes, inter alia, public law offences, participant violence, criminal prosecution process and the law relating to doping and corruption. The civil law focuses on sports negligence and defences as well as trespass to the person.

  • Other: email contact with student. The module permits the student to submit a draft answer which is commented on by the tutor prior to submitting the final assignment
