Food Safety Law

Module code: LLMP 5244

Module description

In recent years the publicity given to food scares has raised the profile of food safety. However, legal concern for food safety has been around for a considerable time. The module begins with an historical account of food safety law and considers the background to the passage of the Food Safety Act 1990.

It is important that food is prepared safely at all stages of the food chain. This module seeks to examine the current law on food safety, from the point that the ingredients enter the factory to the time of consumption. In particular, the module considers the law on food hygiene and how the law has developed in this area. Emergency powers to deal with unsafe food are also considered in depth.

The module does not, in general, consider the potential safety concerns at the food source. These issues are dealt with by a separate module, Food Sources Protection.
