Environmental Assessment

Module code: LLMP 5203

Module description

Environmental Assessment law has evolved over the last 30 years as one of the key environmental law mechanisms. Environmental assessment can be broadly divided into two main areas and separate legal mechanisms: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). The EIA is the evaluation process for assessing the likely impact of individual development projects whereas the SEA is the more strategic approach of evaluating policy and programme options. There is an international dimension which aids broader understanding.

This module includes the following topics:

  1. Origins of environmental assessment law
  2. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) law in UK and EU
  3. International Environmental Impact Assessment law
  4. Strategic Environmental Assessment Law
  5. Other types of environmental assessment - appropriate assessment, sustainability appraisals and environmental risks
