Module description

The module examines the law relating to the pollution of the atmosphere. The topics covered include: common law liabilities for atmospheric pollution; stationary sources of atmospheric pollution; the statutory nuisance regime as it applies to emissions of fumes etc; the Clean Air legislation, in particular the prohibition on the emission of dark smoke, chimney heights and smoke control areas; Air Quality Management; development control; environmental permitting; alternative control models, in particular tax incentives and emissions trading schemes both at the domestic and EU levels.

Assessments

  • Assignment 1 (4000 words): 40%
  • Assignment 2 (6000 words): 60%

Additional costs: Students may choose to purchase one or more textbooks relevant to the module. Students may choose to attend the optional Study days and incur travel/accommodation costs.
