Module description

This module seeks to introduce students to one of the central debates on the changing character of the international system which is focused on the role of diplomacy, as both process and institutional mechanism. The module examines the development and nature of diplomacy and its changing role and modes of operation. The module critiques differing explanations of the international environment in which diplomacy operates and reviews in details the functions of diplomacy as well as its historical development. Specific case studies, including the topics of trade, security and the environment, examine in detail the way in which the diplomatic system operates in the contemporary world.
