Module description
This module examines international politics and security in the post-Cold War period. The module begins by considering the way in which the end of the Cold War was one of the most dramatic and at the same time unexpected events of the twentieth century. The module considers the relationship between order and justice in international relations and links this to debates on the New World Order that emerged after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The module examines the position of the United States as the sole superpower after the Cold War and the extent to which the US has been able to exert its model of order at a global level. The module examines challenges to traditional notions of order that rest on the nation state, from globalization to the environment and nuclear weapons to terrorism. The module analyses the impact of shifting power balances in the post-Cold War era and the extent to which the West has been able to uphold its interests through security, the international economic system and international organisations. Challenges to such Western concepts of order are examined.
