International applications to study at De Montfort University

Every year, more than 2,700 international students from over 130 countries choose to study with us. To begin your application to study at DMU, simply complete the steps below.

Step 1: Download a free application form

Step 2: Prepare the following documents

        • A copy of your qualifications
        • A copy of your English language certificate  
        • A personal statement of at least 500 words detailing why you want to study your chosen course at DMU and any additional information that will support your application
        • A copy of your passport
        • 1 reference for undergraduate study/ 2 references for postgraduate study
        • Some of our creative courses may ask for a portfolio - see our portfolio advice

Step 3: Return your application and documents to the Admissions Office at

International students can also apply via our DMU Online Portal and undergraduate students can apply via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) using the UCAS Institution Code: DEM/D26.

Please note, this option is not available to current students wishing to apply for a new programme, or for recent DMU students wishing to apply for a new programme that have graduated since 2015. For these students please follow one of the alternative options or complete the international application form and email to

What happens after I apply?

When applying as an international student there are a number of additional elements that are required in addition to the application form. An application can only be looked at once we have your application form as well as a copy of your passport and qualifications, so please make sure you have submitted all elements of the application including all documentation required.

You’ll then receive one of the following decisions by email:

Conditional Offer – This means you still need to submit outstanding documents. Your place will be reserved until you meet the rest of the entry criteria.

Unconditional offer – This means you meet the entry criteria and have submitted all necessary documents. Your place will be reserved until you accept or decline your offer. If you accept, you’ll be required to pay a deposit. 

Alternative course – This means you do not meet the entry criteria for the course you applied for but you are suitable for another course.

Reject – This means you do not meet the entry criteria, we will offer an alternative course where possible.

Next steps after you've received an unconditional offer

After you’ve satisfied all criteria and have received your unconditional offer, you'll need to accept your offer and pay a deposit as outlined in your offer letter. We’ve listed a few steps below that should help you through the process of studying and moving to the UK.
