Pre-sessional English courses
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, all our summer 2020 Pre-sessional English courses will be run online, through a combination of live remote classes and interactive distance learning materials developed by our CELL team. I can assure you that you will receive our usual excellent standard of teaching, and that successful completion of the course will enable you to meet the English entry requirement for your bachelor's or master’s programme at DMU (Philip Rule, Director of CELL).
We understand that this can be a difficult and worrying time for everyone. For information about DMU's response to the pandemic, please visit the Your DMU Future pages. We particularly recommend reading our information for international students page.
Pre-sessional English courses allow you to study English with the objective of reaching the language requirements necessary to enrol on your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate course. On a Pre-sessional English course, you will learn and improve your:
As well as this, you will be able to develop study skills such as independent learning, critical thinking and research. These skills are all vital for successful study at undergraduate and postgraduate level at DMU.
If you have already reached the required level, attendance at the Pre-sessional is not compulsory but highly recommended. Non-DMU students are also welcome to study English at the university on the standard route.
Courses, fees and dates
Each course is intended to raise your English level by the equivalent of 0.5 of an IELTS score.
To achieve an IELTS equivalent of 6.0, which is necessary for enrolling onto most DMU courses, you will need to complete pre-sessional C and any previous courses, depending on your current IELTS level.
For example, if your current IELTS is 4.5, you will need to complete courses A, B and then C, which will each raise your score by 0.5, with a final outcome of 6.0.
To achieve an IELTS equivalent of 6.5, which is necessary for students applying for MPhil/PhD study and some postgraduate courses, you will need to complete pre-sessional D, and again, any previous courses depending on your current IELTS level.
New course dates and fees for 2020/21 are being decided and we will add information here as soon as we can. If you have a specific query about our courses in 2021, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
