Professor Andy Collop
Professor Andy Collop was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor in February 2015, serving as Interim Vice-Chancellor between February 2019 and January 2021. He joined De Montfort University (DMU) as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Technology in September 2011 before taking on the additional role of Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation in 2012.
After completing a BEng in Mechanical Engineering (Thames Polytechnic) and a PhD in Mechanical/Civil Engineering at the University of Cambridge, Andy was appointed to a lectureship in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Nottingham in 1996. He progressed rapidly through the academic ranks to a personal Chair in Civil Engineering in 2004, and in 2006 was awarded a DSc from The University of Nottingham for his research into pavement and rail track engineering. He has been an investigator on research grants and contracts worth in excess of £15 million, has published more than 180 journal and conference papers and is a member of many editorial boards and technical committees.
While at Nottingham, Andy held a number of managerial roles within the Faculty of Engineering, including Head of the Department/School of Civil Engineering, Associate Dean for External Relations and Internationalisation and Associate Dean for Infrastructure and Information Services.
Involved in many external activities, 2008 saw Andy chair a panel on technology for the built environment for an international research assessment exercise undertaken at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. In 2011 he was appointed a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Urban and Rural Construction and Transport. With commercial experience principally through links with Scott Wilson, Andy was a non-executive Director of a joint venture with The University of Nottingham and Scott Wilson Pavement Engineering Ltd.
On a personal level, Andy enjoys equestrian activities including eventing and show jumping; a passion that he shares with his daughter. He also likes keeping fit through swimming and cycling as an active member of the Leicester Forest Cycling Club.
