Counselling and wellbeing

We offer a range of services aimed at promoting emotional wellbeing and helping you to achieve your full potential at DMU. Hundreds of DMU students access our services each year.

Counselling deals with a range of issues including depression, anxiety, stress and confidence building.

The mental health team can help students with a diagnosed mental health condition get support for their studies. Students diagnosed by a Doctor with a mental health condition may be eligible for Disabled Student Allowance. Follow this link for information on the DSA.

We are keen to reach out to students who make less use of our services, for example students from the BME community. Together with other welfare teams, we have a project plan for 2016/17. We will consult with students and staff to identify ways of increasing visibility and access. Ideas are welcome -contact the counselling team leader Trevor Butlin at tbutlin@dmu.ac.uk.

Our Annual Report can be read here and our report into the counselling experiences and outcome of Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) students can be read here.

What students say about counselling

"Knowing that coming to counselling would not go on my uni records was a big relief. The confidentiality really mattered. Thank you very much for all of your help. I think if it hadn't been for you I wouldn't have continued with the year, so I really mean it, thank you."

M, Business and Law

"Counselling has been a fantastic experience. I came to you in my first term when I lost direction. You totally sorted out my life and way of thinking. You also gave me the tools to deal with my life and its problems. Thank you."

K, Art, Design and Humanities

“I didn’t know the support that was available, it’s fantastic how much help is out there.”

T, Health and Life Sciences
