Buddy scheme for new international students!
There have been a lot of applications for this scheme and so i-Buddies 2019 is currently operating a waiting list
By coming to De Montfort University (DMU) you are beginning a life-changing adventure, but you may still need some help along the way. Coming to live in a new country is exciting, though at first it can seem challenging or even a little stressful.
Things can seem different from what you are used to in your own country, particularly if English is not your first language.
i-Buddies are here to help! Our scheme will match you with an existing DMU student who has already been here for a year or more. We hope your new buddy will be able to help you to make new friends, show you the city and DMU and settle into your new life in Leicester.
More than 1250 students have been involved in i-Buddies since it began in 2012. We have a limited amount of DMU Buddies available and there is often a waiting list. The scheme runs on a first come first served basis so we strongly recommend an early application!
How will the scheme work?
- You register onto the scheme,
- We match you with an existing DMU student, who will become your “buddy”.
- Your buddy will send you an email at the start of the new term
- You arrange to meet up, so that you can start to get to know them.
Your buddy will keep in contact with you and arrange to meet up every 2 weeks. You are also welcome to contact your buddy if you have any questions whilst you’re at DMU. We will organise some events in your first few weeks so you get the opportunity to meet up with other Buddies and new international arrivals.
The i-Buddies scheme is for your first term only. However, you are of course welcome to stay in contact with your buddy if you both wish to. You shouldn’t expect that you’ll automatically become best friends with your buddy – but if you do, then that’s great!
The i-Buddies scheme is optional – you don’t have to take part if you don’t want to.
Student feedback from previous schemes
“The scheme has been really beneficial for me as you know that there is someone there to whom you can reach out to, who will be there to support you, who knows the city and the university. I have had such a great experience and will continue my association with the scheme.” Tanmay
“I have really enjoyed i-Buddies it has been a fun way to meet and make friends with students from all over the world – I have learnt a lot about other cultures and am keen to promote the scheme to other DMU students – Just do it!’ Funmi
