The DMU Music ensembles present a wealth of opportunities for amateur and professional musicians on campus and within the county.
Led by a team of professional musical directors, each ensemble strives to create quality musical experiences through performing an ambitious, challenging repertoire, focusing on the development and skills of our musicians.
DMU Jazz Band
The DMU Jazz Band was created through DMU’s strategic partnership with Leicester Jazz House in 2016. The Jazz Band performs a wide array of jazz, incorporating classics such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as more modern artists such as Norah Jones. In addition to live performance, DMU Jazz Band recorded their debut album ‘Ladybird’ in 2020. A highly creative and dedicated team, the band recorded part of the album during lockdown, as well as creating their own YouTube mini-series.
The DMU Jazz Band rehearse on every Wednesday evening during term time from 18:30 – 20:30 in the Chantry building and perform at venues in around Leicester throughout the year. Follow the band's rehearsals and concerts on Twitter or Instagram via @dmujazzband.

Taiko drumming is an ancient Japanese Art form that’s highly accessible and easy to pick up. It makes for a great physical exercise as well as mental relaxation, through focussing on the rhythm of the drums. DMU Taiko is open to all our students and staff and is a fun, accessible and relaxing way to spend an afternoon!
These weekly term-time workshops run every Wednesday 2 – 4pm, led by the expert team of Bullfrog Arts, and include rhythm games, learning traditional repertoire and creating new pieces of music for performances.
