Ensembles

The DMU Music ensembles present a wealth of opportunities for amateur and professional musicians on campus and within the county.

Led by a team of professional musical directors, each ensemble strives to create quality musical experiences through performing an ambitious, challenging repertoire, focusing on the development and skills of our musicians.

DMU Orchestra

Centred around DMU’s partnership with the internationally renowned Philharmonia Orchestra, the DMU Orchestra brings together DMU students and staff with local and international, amateur and professional musicians. Led by internationally-renowned conductor and violinist, Adrián Varela, the DMU Orchestra aims to make orchestral music more accessible to everyone, often performing in local churches, as well as venues such as HMP Leicester.

Since the premiere of their first concert in June 2016, the Orchestra has performed a total of 8 concerts, with repertoire including such pieces as: Beethoven's Ninth, Seventh and Second Symphonies, Mozart’s ‘Overture to the Marriage of Figaro’ and Symphony No. 41 ‘Jupiter’, and Handel's 'Zadok the Priest', alongside classic rock anthems, such as AC/DC's 'Back in Black' and Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

Rather than rehearse weekly, the orchestra meets for an intensive rehearsal schedule in the build up to each concert (three rehearsals).

These weekly term-time workshops run every Wednesday 2 – 4pm, led by the expert team of Bullfrog Arts, and include rhythm games, learning traditional repertoire and creating new pieces of music for performances.
