Pre-Top Up Programme in Business (PTUP)

The Pre-top up programme in business has been designed to help international students transition into the final year of an undergraduate degree programme with De Montfort University (DMU).

The programme is offered as a one term (of 10 weeks) or two term (of 20 weeks) and upon successful completion of the PTUP, students will continue directly to the top-up or final year of selected undergraduate business-related programmes at DMU.

If you do not have the grades required for direct entry to the top-up or final year of an undergraduate degree at DMU, the PTUP is the ideal route for you. 

The PTUP will support you in your transition from learning in your home country to learning alongside UK university students.  The PTUP is designed to help you develop your skills in English Language and acquire advanced study skills and critical thinking skills to continue with confidence to the top-up or final year of your undergraduate degree at the university.

You will start your PTUP in April (two terms) or June (one term) and upon successful completion, you will continue directly to your chosen undergraduate degree at DMU in September.


Business Communication

This module has a language and skills development focus but also aims to engage students directly with their business-related studies.  This is achieved by putting language and skills acquisition firmly in the context of effective communication in business.  The value of the generic study is immediately enhanced for the student by context.  It also focuses the student on issues of importance to his or her further undergraduate studies by dealing with questions of sourcing and evaluating material, use of library and VLE, research skills and methods and oral as well as written communication. 

International Business Issues

This module is designed to address a number of current issues facing international business today.  In particular, it aims to provide students with a deeper appreciation of the role of business in society, together with an insight into alternative economic and social structures.  It specifically sets out to challenge many implicit assumptions and accepted norms.  The analytical model employed views business as only one component within an interlocking system with government and society, in which all three components operate and interact within a complex and dynamic environment. 

English for Academic Purposes

As an international student, it is vital you can communicate in English and understand your tutors and classmates.  In addition to the core modules, there are also English language modules.  You will learn how to fully express your opinions and arguments in writing as well as through speech; you will also be able to produce high-quality written academic work and enhance your research skills.

Introduction to UK University Study

This module helps you to gain the confidence and achieve the skills, necessary for study at an advanced level.  It provides opportunities to explore the meaning of learning in a university context.  You will also learn about and practice skills required for essay and report writing.

Contemporary Management I (Two term only)

This is the introductory course in management and operations. The course is designed to provide you with an overview of the management function and its role in organisations and society. The module will introduce the latest management ideas, theories and practice in an interesting and relevant manner, whilst still retaining the best of traditional management thinking. It will also focus on the operations function, which is at the heart of all enterprises, whether manufacturing or service based.

Contemporary Management II (Two term only)

This is the second module in an introductory course in management and operations. The course is designed to provide you with an overview of the management function and its role in organisations and society. This module focuses on the role of management in responding to the challenge of change within the organisation, how to plan for and implement it. It further considers how management motivates employees, maintains and enhances its services, assesses performance, safeguards quality and an ethical approach to management.

International Marketing (Two term only)

This module addresses global issues and describes concepts relevant to all international marketers. You will review marketing strategy from a managerial, organisational and country perspective. It provides the transition for you to progress from a purely domestic approach towards international, to consider methods for operating in an overseas market, or in a domestic market with increasing competition from abroad.

Entry requirements

English Language

Standard entry IELTS 5.5 (no component below 5.5). 

Students with a lower IELTS will be required to do either a 6 week or 12 week pre-sessional English programme.

IELTS 4.5 (no component below 4.0) with 12 week pre-sessional English programme


IELTS 5.0 (no component below 4.5) with 6 week pre-sessional English programme


IELTS 5.5 (any component below 5.5) with 6 week pre-sessional English programme
