IIB: International First Year

The International First Year (IFY), delivered at DMUIC provides an intensive combination of first year university subjects with extra study and language skills. The IFY is the first year of the three-year International Incorporated Bachelors (IIB) degree.

Upon successful completion of the IFY, you will continue to the second year of study at DMU.  

Students can choose to join the IFY course either in September or January.

Course structure

Every IFY has a number of core and compulsory modules, including:

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

As an international student, it is vital that you are able to communicate in English and understand your lectures.

Continuing your degree

You will start the first year of your chosen International Incorporated Bachelor's degree (Stage 2) at DMUIC. Once you have successfully completed the IFY, you will continue directly into the second year (Stage 3) of that degree, studying directly with DMU. You will have individual subject tutors who will make sure that you are on track to achieve your study goals.

English language lessons

In addition to the core modules, there is also a continuous English language module to help undergraduate students improve their language skills.

English Language Requirements

Standard entry of IELTS 5.5 (no component below 5.5).  Students with a lower English level will be required to do either a 6 week or 12 week pre-sessional English programme. 

  • IELTS 4.5 (no component below 4.0) with 12 week pre-sessional English programme

or

  • IELTS 5.0 (no component below 4.5) with 6 week pre-sessional English programme

or

  • IELTS 5.5 (any skill below 5.5) with 6 week pre-sessional English programmer

and

Hong Kong HKDSE minimum levels 333 or 332 in relevant subjects, or HKALE two passes minimum grade E in Maths and Science subjects, grade D in other subjects, or equivalent to 48 UCAS points
India Standard XII with 50% average
Indonesia SMA/SMU/SMK 3 average grade of 7.0 (70%) or SMA/SMU/SMK 3 plus one year of further study
International Baccalaureate (IB) 22 Points
Ivory Coast Diplome Universitaire de Technologie with minimum 12/20
Japan Special Training School Advanced Course Certificate with at least 3.0/5.0 or 60%, or Associate Degree 
Jordan Tawjihiya/Thanawihya/General Secondary School Certificate with good grades (60%) and at least one year of higher study. Certificate of General Secondary Education with 5 passes (minimum pass is 50%) and successful completion of at least one year of higher study
Kenya East African School Certificate/Cambridge Overseas School Certificate/KCSE with good grades and successful completion of one further years higher study, or Diploma/Ordinary Diploma/Ordinary Technician Diploma/University Diploma with 50% or above
